In 1889 the Squire Barker family traveled by covered wagon from Moran, Texas, to a homestead in the Sapello Canyon northwest of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The book concludes with the family centennial celebration at the old homestead in 1989. This pioneer family included: S. Omar, well-known western author and poet; Elliott, the 'Daddy' of Smokey Bear and nationally known wildlife conservationist; Charles, attorney and former mayor of Santa Fe; and Grace B. wilson, the first woman and first living person to be inducted into the New Mexico Education Hall of Fame.
