Editorial Reviews

2013 release, the sophomore album from the superstar Country trio. Building on the musical foundation demonstrated by the band on their first album, Pioneer is steeped in Country tradition, with Rock 'n' Roll elements both on performance and songwriting. The album was produced by Dann Huff and has been listed as one of Entertainment Weekly's 12 Albums We Can't Wait For. ''When we set out to record Pioneer, the three of us drove across the country from Greeneville to Malibu to work with one of our musical superheroes, Rick Rubin,'' said Reid Perry. ''Our time in the studio with Rick was so incredible because during our early sessions he challenged us to set higher goats as songwriters.'' ''With that experience came the realization that we needed to take the music back home to Tennessee and have Dann Huff bring the songs to life with his production,'' adds Neil Perry. ''Sometimes where one starts off is not where one ends up, which is a big theme for us on Pioneer.''

There are few times when I feel compelled to buy a true CD, rather than just one of two selected tracks. After seeing The Band Perry in concert in 2012, I purchased their first self-titled album. Not at all disappointed, I felt compelled to pre-order their new CD, Pioneer. The Band Perry has done it again. I was shocked that Pioneer not only matched, (in my opinion)but actually surpassed its predecessor.

The album keeps its listener entertained and almost in an emotional whirlwind. The songs jump from sad, funny, romantic, inspiring, and just plain 'catchy.' I found myself singing along with parts of the songs the first time I heard them. The lyrics are unique and thought provoking (ranging from "Don't let me be lonely tonight/take the keys to my car and the keys to my heart and just drive" to "Scratched our names in that oak tree/ because I loved you and you loved me/....I came out here to see it one more time/and I got my chainsaw") while the songs themselves have great harmonies.

Pioneer, while some tracks are better than others, is a wholesome well balanced album with the best aspects of Rock, Country, Pop, and Bluegrass. All of the songs on this album are enjoyable, most are well above average, and a select few are bound to be among my favorites for a long, long time. I full-heartedly recommend Pioneer for anyone's CD collection, it's a keeper.

I've been pleased by many artists' new CD releases over the years, but perhaps by none more so than The Band Perry's "Pioneer."

And for good reason, too: TBP's sophomore album leads off with "Better Dig Two," their recent number one smash hit about a girl's...loyal...commitment to her lover, which might vaguely remind listeners of the Overly Attached Girlfriend Internet meme. The song is terrifically written, the harmonies are beautifully executed, and Kimberly Perry sets the song ablaze with her soaring lead voice. After that, we have "DONE." Again, another future Number One prospect, another set of scintillating harmonies, another bracket of riveting lyrics.

The next song, "Don't Let Me Be Lonely," is one of my favorite songs on the entire record. As its title suggests, this song tells of a young girl anxious for love, telling her special someone to "take the keys to my car and my heart," so that she can be happy. While both of the first two songs had great vocals, these tones were just haunting. I could go on for quite a while about this track.

The title track is an anthem for the trailblazers, for the pioneers who lead the way and lay the path down for those to come. It's great, just like "Forever Mine Nevermind," a great rocker song in which the listener will be treated to a kickin' Brad Paisley guitar show; "Night Gone Wasted," which, although perhaps not as strong as the previous track, is pretty good nonetheless; "I Saw a Light," a nice treasure-that-no-one-else-found Country staple song; and "Mother Like Mine," an ode to Mom which might or might not carry echoes of Tracy Lawrence's "If the World Had a Front Porch."

Then, there's "Chainsaw.

This album is brilliant. The Band Perry defies any rigidity of genre. Whether you're listening to the edgy rock elements of "Better Dig Two", "Done", or "Night Gone Wasted", or the folksy, emotional melodies of "Pioneer", "I Saw a Light", or "Back to Me Without You," The Band Perry always ties it together perfectly with their country roots heard in the moving strings, melodic banjos, and brilliant harmonization. Pick this album up now, you will not regret it.

"Pioneer", The Band Perry's second album, is definitely not a sophomore slump. In fact, it's better than their first album. The first album was great, but "Pioneer" is a more a mature product. The lyrics are stronger, and the band now has a grittier sound. The band has a long career ahead of them.

Like their previous work, country is blended with pop and rock. The upbeat numbers were made to be performed for arenas and stadiums. There are huge choruses and loud guitars. The slower tracks demonstrate the band's ability at creating beautiful harmonies. The lyrics often concern exploits in love. They are sometimes sad, sometimes angry, and sometimes happy. There are more dark moments on the album than celebratory. Kimberly Perry packs more of an attitude here than before. Not as much as Miranda Lambert, but not as sweet as Taylor Swift.

My favorite tracks are "Better Dig Two", "DONE.", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely", "Forever Mine Nevermind", "Mother Like Mine", and "Chainsaw". "Better Dig Two" is rock-flavored track that tells the story of an overly obsessive wife. "DONE." is a send-off anthem that introduces the world to Kim's new attitude. "Don't Let Me Be Lonely" is a ballad about the desire not to be lonely. I believe this should be the next single. "Forever Mine Nevermind" features Brad Paisley and mixes elements of stadium rock and country. "Mother Like Mine" is a mid-tempo country track where Kim celebrates her mother. "Chainsaw" is an upbeat country-pop song that's playful and super catchy. The emotional, folky title track and "I'm A Keeper" are also strong.
