Grade 4-7?Unnumbered chapters headed by such questions as "How Are Scientists Exploring the Depths?" "What's the Seafloor Like in the Depths?" and "What Are Deep-sea Animals Like?" contain related explanatory information and a relevant experiment in this rather dry look at the world beneath the seas. Each page is illustrated with one or more nondistinctive full-color photograph of scientists at work, ships and underwater vessels, and the animal and plant life found at various depths. The experiments are performed by the same three children throughout, two girls and one boy, and their pleasure at learning is shown on their faces. Some of these projects become rather involved, especially one that utilizes layers of lime and cherry Jell-O, and creating a current in a pie plate of salty water using batteries and a flashlight bulb. Colorful drawings show such features as a salt dome under sediment layers and how all the oceans are one body of water. The index leads to various topics within the narrative but not to the experiments.?Frances E. Millhouser, Reston Regional Library, VA
