Buyer---JUST SAY NO,
By
This review is from: Pionus Parrots: A Complete Guide (Hardcover)
Wish I would've read the review BEFORE I ordered this book! Having a pionus in the family, I've been waiting for a GOOD Pionus-specific book & this did NOT live up to my expectations. Not only for Pionus info, but even general parrot husbandry info which, btw, is ALL this book is about, essentially. There are VERY few tidbits specific to Pionus. And the important ones are left OUT!
Specifically, I'm VERY disappointed especially regarding the "health care" section: I have not even seen a mention to the fact that Pionus can make a wheezing sound when scared or excited and this is totally normal. I would think this would b a MAJOR Pionus specific point to be included, especially for new owners! Reason? Vets inexperienced w/ Pionus parrots HAVE TREATED the birds with MEDS for this VERY NORMAL behavior! Which, in some cases have led to health complications for a previously HEALTHY BIRD! This is a tiny book in size, pages, content, even pictures! Listen to the 1st reviewer, NOT worth your consideration let alone the over 45 hard earned bucks you'd be blowing BIG TIME. I have to believe that the people that gave more than 1 star have to OBVIOUSLY be affliated w/ the publisher or author. I hope someone does come out with a GOOD pet owner's Pionus handbook. Until then, join an internet group or go to Pionus specific web sites; there's a lot of people who have had them as pets and cherish & will be able to give you good info & answer questions you may have. We know them as family and want people to be *properly* educated, which you won't get here in this book.

Not Worth It!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pionus Parrots: A Complete Guide (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I thought there would be some information that was specific to Pionus to help in raising my new bird. Most of the information in this book is generic to all parrots which can either be found on the internet for FREE or in other parrot books for less than half the price. The print is larger than you would find in most books on top of duplicate information found throughout the book, which is an indication they were trying to increase the page count. I was extremely disappointed with this purchase and do not think this book is worth any more than $15. Buyer BEWARE!

Anticipated title, but disappointing,

This review is from: Pionus Parrots: A Complete Guide (Hardcover)
I returned this book to the seller. I have four Pionus parrots and was eagerly awaiting a book on them that would provide some information to the average bird owner. Instead, it is noninformative for the average owner. Very disappointing. Very little practical information on how to care for them, their traits or food preferences. Simply not interesting to the owner of these dear Parrots. Perhaps of interest to a person who is employed in the field--scientific concentration. Very expensive, yet very slim book.

Amateurish,

Don't waste your money. Slim volume, full of repetition (often the exact same sentence is used in adjoining sections!). Even the photographs are repeated!Interesting, also, is the poor editing. Sentence fragments, mis-used words, non-existent words--the whole thing smacks of desperation to get enough words to make a book. There is nothing in this book you can't find, for free, on the web.

I would have been better off with an encyclopedia!,

I expected help on having these birds as pets. For $45, I only learned what I could have learned in any encyclopedia. Book was very boring and technical. Tiny too. There's SO much more a new pionus owner needs to know!

PIONUS PARROTS: A COMPLETE GUIDE,

This review is from: Pionus Parrots: A Complete Guide (Hardcover)
This book seems to be aimed mostly at breeders and avian scientists. It has very little about keeping pionus parrots as pets, but it still has quite a bit of interesting information about the breed.

Beautiful pictures and interesting info,

It's more a scientific issue on Pionus parrots than a collection of anedoctes as usually standard in this type of essay, but I found here a lot of info, specific for this adorable species, that's not easy to get elsewhere. Especially interesting the studies on their feeding habits in the wild, and on their features as breeders in captivity (es. they are so fond of chicks that make reliable foster parents for rarer species). I'd have liked more pages for this price, but for sure the many incredibly beautiful pictures and the quality glossy paper are worth the money.

Worth the money,

I am considering a Pionus Parrot for our household and purchased this book to learn more about the species. The author has presented a complete book that answered all of our questions and concerns. I found the historical and breeder information fascinating and helpful even though we have no plans for breeding. The full color format is easy to read and the photographs are beautiful and numerous. A good complete reference book that is worth the price.
