4.0 out of 5 stars What a suprise!
As a love child of the '60's, this book really brought it ALL home: the morality, the politics, the education, the sex--or lack thereof. Waves of nostalgia literally flooded my very being. Anyone still alive from this Camelot will yearn for even more. I anxiously await the sequel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Potential, but it's pretty poor
The story here might be a good one, but the mundane writing, the dead sentences and the overall lifeless prose make it hard to enjoy. I actually only finished half of it. I heard the author at a reading, liked the cover and thought I'd give it a shot. Is this a real publisher? Or is this a vanity press? I hope it's the latter because, frankly, this book is slow.

Everything about this book impressed me -- the cover, the design, and especially the subject matter and plot. You could tell the author was a real pro -- she really knew her stuff and not only had done the research but made sure that every detail was accurate.

Along with lots of history the book had strong characters and was full of surprises -- not all of them Hollywood happy but realistic and well-thought out. So if you like a plot that moves along at a rapid pace, The Pipe Dreamers a good book to curl up with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read, November 8, 2001

For all of us that were born a decade to late this book lets us know what we missed. The "living on the edge" atmospherics kept me on the brink. This is a must read period piece for anyone interested in the tumultuous times of the 60's. Well done Ms. Gurvis !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures the feel of the period, August 5, 2001

This review is from: The Pipe Dreamers (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book because it captures the feel of the period. As a boomer who was in college during those days, I recognize the thinking and behavior. I think the book will appeal to other boomers too. It would also be interesting for young adults to read about stuff their parents will never tell them -- and compare it to their own college experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read, August 2, 2001
This review is from: The Pipe Dreamers (Paperback)
I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. It is essentially a romance set against the backdrop of an embattled 60's college campus. The characters are struggling to find themselves while being forced to grow up all too quickly; draft notices and bombings, riots and arrests compete with broken hearts and first loves. The story is told in flashback, beginning with the central character a politician's wife on vacation. She believes she has spotted her college lover who disappeared long ago. She is reminded in a rush of her youth and its turmoil, thus unfolding the story.

I recommend this to anyone who wants a great read with oomph -- it will entertain while it makes you think!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a trip!, August 1, 2001

You can judge this book by its cover. Not only is it beautifully designed, but the plot is equally well-constructed. It captured my attention from the sexy prologue (check out the "tight buns" description, ladies) but the suspenseful plot should also appeal to guys.

The author has all the details right, along with providing a strong, believable and ironic love story. Who can believe the '60s are history, anyway? It seems just like "Yesterday."

5.0 out of 5 stars I recognize *this* campus!, August 1, 2001

I don't remember the author, but I do recall the campus of Miami University during that period. Busted!

This book was a real blast from the past. Don't know if it was picking out the landmarks or the strong details that made it such fun to read. Plus the ending was a real shocker, not like those slurpy happy endings you see in novels and movies today.

I guarantee, THE PIPE DREAMERS will not put you to sleep. In fact, it was pretty hard to put down.
