Amazon.com Product Description

A long time ago in the inky blackness of space lived the Pipe Planet, a small blue-green planet inhabited solely by small Pipe people. The Pipes went happily about their daily piping just like all the other Pipe people before them. For the Pipe people, life was good. Everyday was spent under the Pipe sun, in the Pipe sea, or on the Pipe beach. However, one evil little Pipe was not happy. She didn't like the Pipe sun, or the Pipe sea, or the Pipe beach, and she definitely didn't like the Pipe people. So begins the story of this whimsical little game, and the beginning of the player's task.

Tooled with spanner and pipe, you must piece together a pipeline that directs the relentless flow of flooze down the plug hole. It will take all your strategic skills and pipe-fitting prowess to keep one step ahead of the incessant, seeping sewage. There are 18 continents, each with three levels, to save from the evil flooze. Each continent hosts its own characters and hazards. Power-ups keep you going when the flowing gets tough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but let down by so-so graphics and awkward controls, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Pipe Dreams 3D (Video Game)
The Pipe Dream game I was most familiar with before this one was from LucasArts, for the PC. The PC version has crisp, clear graphics and an easy interface.

The PSX version is an update with a few gimmicks that actually do help to make the game more challenging. While you are busy building the pipeline to carry the ooze, the gameboard changes to present various challenges. So, while you're working to keep the ooze flowing you're also trying to steer the flow in a particular direction.

The problem, though, is that this is all depicted with graphics that are sub-par. Considering that a good rendering shouldn't have been too tough for a game like this, it is surprising how unclear things can be at some points. Another problem is that the bends in the angled pipe pieces are too shallow, sometimes causing you to hesitate while you determine whether the current piece is turning to the left or to the right. Also, when you have placed a piece on the board and determine that you need to change it multiple times, you can't continue to click on the piece again and again to do so -- you instead have to *leave* the piece, then come back to it. This causes unnecessary delay and makes me wonder if it was intentional (to add to the challenge) or just an oversight by the designers.

However, once you get used to the look and the controls the game is engrossing and worth the low price. It requires constant attention so playing even 3 or 4 levels can make you ready for a rest. However I can't help but think it was a rush job and could have stood a bit more polish.
