5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent debut
I picked up this book on a whim, expecting a run-of-the-mill thriller. After the first few chapters, I couldn't put it down. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Good First Effort
The Piper's Sons is a good psychological thriller by first-time author Bruce Chandler Fergusson. Actually, I would have rated this book "3 1/2" stars if Amazon allowed for such a rating. His debut novel provides a good writing style, a well-developed plot and a variety of surprises. However, I found the story dragged on for some long stretches which, at...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent debut, December 17, 1999
This review is from: The Piper's Sons (Paperback)
I picked up this book on a whim, expecting a run-of-the-mill thriller. After the first few chapters, I couldn't put it down. Fergusson's plot is inventively deceptive - just when you think you've got it figured out, he drops another bomb which sends things in another direction. And there's a jawdropper of a surprise at the end which sort of creeps into your consciousness before you get there, and then leaves you breathless when it's revealed.

I agree with some of the other reviewers that the "action" sequences in the latter part of the book seem to be a nod towards Hollywood, but they do not detract from the flow of things (although some familiarity with ship architecture and terminology helps a lot). In any case, enough of the rest of the book is non-formulaic enough to be entertaining in its own right. For example, I had expected a lot of themes revolving around wood and carpentry since it is the protagonist's profession; fortunately, this is kept to a minimum (one scene, actually).

Definately a good read, and there are enough strings left dangling for a sequel. I'm definately looking out for Mr. Fergusson's next work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterful suspense thriller, with depth and intrigue., October 11, 1999
This review is from: The Piper's Sons (Hardcover)
Bruce Chandler Ferguson has created an exciting, masterful, and complex new book. I am one to anticipate most endings, however Mr. Ferguson has outdone me on this one. The Piper's son had me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I was dazzled and intrigued through out it's entierty. Bravo Mr. Ferguson. Here's one Washingtonian waiting for your next masterpiece.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good First Effort, January 17, 2000

This review is from: The Piper's Sons (Hardcover)
The Piper's Sons is a good psychological thriller by first-time author Bruce Chandler Fergusson. Actually, I would have rated this book "3 1/2" stars if Amazon allowed for such a rating. His debut novel provides a good writing style, a well-developed plot and a variety of surprises. However, I found the story dragged on for some long stretches which, at times, caused my interest level to wane. Further, while he spent sufficient time developing the major and minor characters, I found myself not caring as much about them as the author would have wanted me to. Also, I felt that Fergusson tried to weave too many elements into the story which I, at times, found to be confusing and which he never completely tied together at the end. Perhaps he's left the door opened for a sequel. Despite these minor criticisms The Piper's Sons is worth reading and Fergusson is an author with a lot of potential.

4.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!, June 21, 1999

This review is from: The Piper's Sons (Hardcover)
If you like suspense you will love this book. I read it in a day - couldn't put it down.

If you are like me and can usually guess where the story is headed you won't have that problem here. Great twists and turns with enough to keep you wanting more but not so crazy that you feel like you've been tricked.

If you live in Washington, or ever have, you will enjoy all of the geographical references. I'm not sure someone who has never lived in the area would get all of the references but that wouldn't hurt their enjoyment of the story - just more fun for those that do understand the link between coal and Newcastle, etc.

The fight scene was a little much - too Jean Claude Van Dame for my tastes. It felt like it was written with the movie rights in mind. Maybe men feel differently - I 'll ask my husband when he is finished. He never reads my "mysteries" but he hasn't put this one down since I finished.

Can't wait for the next book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Piper's Sons, January 16, 2002

If the movie gods are paying attention, this twisted psychological thriller will soon be at a theater near you.
Fergusson is masterful at eliciting rich visuals from the printed word in a style best described as literary while weaving a sinuous story that draws you deep into the dank recesses of the perverse human psyche. I was as lured in and trapped by the writing in this novel as Bobby Cage was in the horrifying cage sequences. Fergusson snags you on the very first page and takes you on the convoluted psychological journey of two characters, each undergoing their own metamorphosis, a fascinating process to witness, and one so far from ordinary experience that it is freakishly captivating.
I understand that this novel is Fergusson's debut in suspense. Extraordinary. I can't wait for his next one. And the next.

As other reviewers have mentioned, there were some slow parts (ie. historic details pertaining to the setting), however, overall I couldn't put this book down. The twisting plot kept me guessing and rethinking about earlier clues in the book - definately need to read carefully. The ending was shocking and I stayed up all night finishing this book. I hope that this is just the beginning for Fergusson. This book was not at all what I expected when I picked it up - not your average thriller.
