1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Written
This book is poorly written. The author started out with an objective which he did not achieve at the conclusion of the book. The chapter on estimating provides no guidance on design manhours estimate for a piping project. There is no new information here for a person on the verge of piping leadership. Any person who is put in a leadership position without mentoring has...

The individual charged with the management of a piping team must be able to understand the project scope, plan the piping manhour and manpower requirements, decide the piping deliverables, decide the piping specifications and standards to be used, decide the piping procedures to be followed, monitor the piping progress and interface with the other diciplines as a minimum. Additionally, one should also understand the needs of procurement, fabrication and construction; be able to contribute to the construction execution plan and the scopes of work, and be able to negotiate with project management. In short, being a piping lead requires many years of experience and an ability to make and stand by your decisions. James Pennock brings his many years of experience to bear in this book. Here, he not only describes the piping lead's roles and responsibilities, but also provides other pertinent 'need to know' information. This book describes in detail all aspects of the project execution and piping management that every piping lead needs to know in order to take on this challenging role effectively. Purchasers of this book will be getting more than just a guide on piping leadership, but also a reference and resource that will serve them for years to come.

This book is poorly written. The author started out with an objective which he did not achieve at the conclusion of the book. The chapter on estimating provides no guidance on design manhours estimate for a piping project. There is no new information here for a person on the verge of piping leadership. Any person who is put in a leadership position without mentoring has been set-up for a potential failure. Any engineering firm which does the same is not treating itself well.

The book is written with the 2nd person pronoun (which means the reader or YOU)in a style that lectures or giving out sermon. The author should have sent the book for technical and literary style editing before publishing it. There is nothing in the book on how to manage a piping engineering project nor a small piping department. It talks on piping engineering lead, with responsibilities that matches that of project management but failed to discus it.

I regret buying this book in 2001. Over the years I seldom read it, and every time I read it, there is no guidance not enlightenment I can gain from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, July 20, 2006
This review is from: Piping Engineering Leadership for Process Plant Projects (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book and I will be using it frequently as a valued resource. I use the Hercule Design pipe library and I believe that my design work will be much improved by using the two together.

1.0 out of 5 stars Splendid book, October 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Piping Engineering Leadership for Process Plant Projects (Hardcover)
I found this book to be exteremely entertaining. It is written by a narrow minded, do it only one way individual. His spouse writes a glowing review of he book and it seems is the only one to receive good information from it. The information she receives is the possible income from the sale of the book. But she went from a draftsperson to engineer. When did the degree arrive, and in what field. Leggs have a nice day. The author also contributed to the closing of the Fluor Daniel office in Marlton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leading us thru the project, December 29, 2000
This review is from: Piping Engineering Leadership for Process Plant Projects (Hardcover)
This book is a must for all persons in the engineering management field whether a novice or old timer. It is easily understood by all levels and deciplines of engineering and should be required reading for management. The verbal pictures drawn are as clear as if a master draftman himself put pencil to paper and created a drawing. If only such a book were available when I was coming up thru the ranks from draftsman to engineer!
