Excellent compilation,

If you like pipes, this is heaven. If you're luke warm about them, this ought to heat you up. If you can't stand them, you're in for an awakening! This collection features music for different types of pipes -- Union, Highland, and small -- as well as different styles that have developed over the past 50-or-so years. Apart from historical interest, however, the album is a very worthwhile array of a sound that gets deep into your system, to places contemporary pop doesn't even know exist!

Celtic Music Served 'Piping Hot',
By
This review is from: Piping Hot: A Celtic Bagpipe Collection (Audio CD)
Like the other titles in Green Linnet's Celtophile series, this release succeeds on several levels: the music is of consistent high quality, it is generous in its playing time, and it's a terrific bargain to boot.If you love bagpipe music, you won't want to pass on this collection, which features thirteen tracks from eleven artists--only Jerry O'Sullivan and the Tannahill Weavers are given two tracks each. On five of the tracks, the bagpipes are featured as a solo instrument, including O'Sullivan, Matt Conolly (a live performance), Tommy Reck, and perhaps the instrument's greatest ambassador, folklorist and story teller Seamus Ennis (1919-1982). On the remaining eight tracks, the pipes are featured in a group setting or with only one or two other instruments. There are no vocals here, so the emphasis is placed squarely on the bagpipes. This is an amazing collection. Total Running Time: 48:34 RECOMMENDED

A Great Collection,

Do you like Bagpipes? Buy this CD. Do you hate bagpipes? Buy this CD anyway and become a convert! This covers the main types of pipes -- Highland and Uillean -- and even has a little something from the Small pipes too. This is the CD that introduced me to the Tannahill Weavers, which is only one of the reasons I'm glad I found this disc!

I love the Great Highland Bagpipes, and I bought this CD thinking it would be mostly pipes. Boy, was I wrong! At first I was very disappointed, but after listening to the CD a few times, I decided I really liked it. The tracks by the Tannahill Weavers, Seamus Ennis, and Rare Air are some of my favorites. I especially like the tunes with acoustic instruments - a nice blend of pipes and other wind instruments with strings like the banjo and violin. A very nice "Celtic" cd.

A good variety of different pipes and piping styles,
By A Customer
This review is from: Piping Hot: A Celtic Bagpipe Collection (Audio CD)
This is a very nice sample CD, providing everything from tradional Highland piping to the Irish uillean pipes. The CD includes a cut from Rare Air, a band which was a precursor to the big names in bagpipe Celtic Rock today (e.g., Seven Nations, Brother). Scottish small pipes, which are not widely heard in the United States, are exhibited nicely here. If you love bagpipes, or would like to learn more about the different varieties, this is a good place to start. One word of warning: it is guaranteed you will be back to Amazon to buy CDs from the artists featured on this sampler!

Uilliean Pipes at their best,
By
This review is from: Piping Hot: A Celtic Bagpipe Collection (Audio CD)
I was craving for some more uiliean pipes music, but didn't want the usual mixed Chieftains or anything...thats when I found this CD in my local B&N bookstore (... :) and picked up this CD. It was almost as cheap as on here, kinda in the bargain corner of Folk.It is though really amazing...to hear all those different songs with more or less pipes took my breath away! I am into Irish Folk for many years now, but this was one of my most pleasant surprises! I hope they will make a 2nd edition of this with more wonderful tunes.... Little critism..sometimes the switch between very fast song and slow song was a bit off, but all in all a wonderful album esp if you crave those melodic and fast sounds of uilliean pipes (which I prefer anyday to the rather loud and warlike scotish bagpipes).
