Poorly Edited,

This review is from: Pippin: Vocal Selections (Paperback)
I was rather disappointed in this edition. For whatever reason, time signatures, accentuations, rhythms, and even keys have been changed from the original script. If you just wanna tinker with the tunes for your own enjoyment, this book is fine; however, if you are trained enough to know there is a big difference between 3/4 and 6/8, then this book disappoints. Also omits War Is a Science, Finale (Think About Your Life), Glory.

I like this book for it's simple piano music. Great if you are learning to sing these songs... I also enjoyed the bios and history of the play. BUT, why doesn't this book contain "War is a Science"?

Just the Script, Ma'am.,
By
This review is from: Pippin (Hardcover)
This book includes the words and lyrics to Stephen Schwartz' musical PIPPIN. The lyrics don't seem as impressive as they are when combined with the music, but for those who don't have anything more than a basic outline-idea of what the show is about (like I was), this book helps fill in the gaps. The script is kind of bizarre and plays around with a lot of different theatrical conventions.Pippin is the son of Emperor Charlemagne and is scheduled to fill the throne when his father dies. Charlemagne wanted Pippin to be a better ruler than he was and sent him off to the top schools to be educated. Not only did the schooling fill Pippin's head with knowledge, but it also provided him with an empty feeling in his heart. He decides to set forth and do everything he can until the void is filled. That's the gist of the plot. There are also several beheadings, sexual dances, and some time-traveling resurrection. Not to shabby for just a bunch of words written down.

Although it does not contain all the songs, it does include the full sheet music to those it has. the lyrics to "corner of the sky" change a little bit but only for one verse. the music still remains the same so you can still use it in case you're singing a different version. i used this book for a college scholarship audition and i am glad to recommend it to anyone.
