Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Pip, Midge, and Dot, first introduced in The Loopy Coop Hens (2011), are back and they’re curious: where does the truck go when it leaves the farm? There’s a whole world out there, and Pip thinks it’s high time they hitch a ride and see it. However, when Pip climbs aboard, the other two don’t, leaving Pip alone—and trepidation replaces confidence when the truck’s loud noises start. But when they stop, Pip sees that everything looks surprisingly familiar, including, happily, her hen pals. The popular Minerva Louise author offers another charming chicken tale, with a sympathetic portrayal of facing fears and appreciating the comfort and safety of friends and home. Short, simple sentences with peppy touches offer a fine read-aloud, while the large font and episode titles also make this accessible for new readers. Stoeke’s characteristically simply-rendered, bright-colored illustrations depict expressive hens and events with droll details, and reveal to kids early the amusing twist—the farmer is working on the truck’s engine, with the motor running but the truck remaining stationary—in this entertaining, reassuring story. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Shelle Rosenfeld

Midge and Dot and Pip watched the big red truck as it drove away from Loopy Coop Farm. The three hens strutted around as they wondered just where that truck went all the time. When Dot asked where it went, Pit declared, "Out into the wide world. Without us." Pip, who was very bold figured that the back of the truck was big enough to carry them all and that they should go for a ride. Dot figured it was pretty cool, but Midge's mouth dropped open and her eyes grew wide because that would be downright scary. Barnyard chickens really had no business out in the wide world.

When they saw the truck coming back into the yard, Pip began flapping his wings, trying to convince Dot and Midge to go for a ride. Midge tried to get Pip to take the first step because she was "afraid of loud things." Pip leaned his head up against the tire and claimed, "It's quiet now." They all wanted to "go places" and now was their chance. Pip stepped on Midge's head and PLOP! got right into the bed of the truck. Midge and Dot changed their minds. All of a sudden, the truck began to get really loud and Pip was frightened. Did he really want to go places after all?

This is a delightfully zany tale of three chickens who thought they wanted to go places. These Loopy Coop chickens will make anyone chuckle as they dare each other to see the world and go places. The goofy twist at the end convinces Pip, Dot, and Midge in reality there's no place like home. The book, set up in picture book format, has very short chapters. An emergent reader would enjoy tackling this book with a bit of help. It would be lots of fun to read to any group, especially if the reader has an expressive voice. The art work is bold, peppy, and very going place vibrant. If you want to meet a few zany, loopy hens, you'll love this tale!

These hens are a delight! We never grow tired of their antics! Secretly hoping more books will follow, because these are getting quite worn!
