Huzzah ! More Jesamiah !,
By Snowangel (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pirate Code: The Sea Witch Series (Sea Witch Chronicles 2) (Paperback)
Having fallen head over heels for that charming rogue of a pirate captain in the first novel of the series, Sea Witch, I was delighted to get another fix of Jesamiah Acorne in the next book, Pirate Code! As always Helen Hollick brings her considerable skills as one of Britain's top historical writers to her pirate tales for an adult audience. The same wonderful characterisation, vivid description and rattling good story lines keeps the reader turning the pages and yearning for yet more adventures.
Roll on book three, and four and......

Haunting,
This review is from: Pirate Code: The Sea Witch Series (Sea Witch Chronicles 2) (Paperback)
Helen Hollick's second voyage of Jesemiah Acorne was my first encounter with him. Sailing around the Caribbean on Sea Witch brought back many haunting memories of my long sojourn in Jmaaica and I was fascinated by the believable account of what it must have been like to visit those shores in the dress and conditions of the 17th century.
Hollick makes a clear distinction, though, between her serious historical novels and her romances and by intervening with the spirits of the sea and rain she creates a lyrical view of piracy that goes beneath the easy come, easy go violence to the motivation that propels a world traveller. Tiola and Jesemiah are caught between their occupations, social expectations and barriers and their aching love for each other and the reader is carried along. The most convincing aspect of the book for me, though, was the relationship of the Sea Witch to her captain and crew. This, and the sea swell dipping in and out of reality and fantasy make an alluring mix. I recommed the book to lover of fantasy, romance and history, well done Helen Hoillick.
