Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?A fine example of a flashy marketing package that is empty. The illustrations show Pirate Pete, a doll-like figure, galloping through food. The print is a busy conglomeration of sizes and fonts. The tone is cute nautical: when it comes time to melt chocolate over hot water, readers are directed to "ask an ancient mariner to help you." Last, and least, are the recipes: eight of them including stuffed baked potatoes, desserts, snacks, and drinks. The vague directions are not clarified by the pictures. This title is sketchy, disjointed, confusing, and distracting: four words that should never apply to a cookbook. Angela Wilkes's My First Cookbook (Knopf, 1989), also in a picture-book format with full-color photographs, is a far better choice.?Carolyn Jenks, First Parish Unitarian Church, Portland, ME

1.0 out of 5 stars A Big Disappointment, July 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Pirate Cookbook (Hardcover)
My 4-year old daughter was given a copy of this book for her birthday, but she was terribly disappointed with it, for the simple reason that the pirate that appears on the cover & throughout the book does not wear an eyepatch. Apparently the eyepatch is an essential part of the definition of "pirate" in a youngster's iconic vocabulary. He doesn't look much like a pirate to me, either. Judging from my daughter's reaction, this kids' book is a flop.
