This review is from: Pirate Kids - Blackbeard's Lost Treasure (DVD)
I could tell you that this movie is an incredibly low-budget affair, filled with amateurish actors you've never heard of and never will again; that the acting and writing are second rate and the music score sounds like it was composed from stock loops. I could tell you that there are no pirate ships in this movie, no adventure on the high seas, and the "pirates" are modern-day TV thiefs in denim and chambray who seek Blackbeard's treasure in a remote part of N. Carolina rather than some exotic location. I could tell you all that, but none of it matters; because as much as this movie is hard for his overly critical dad to sit through, my soon-to-be-six-year-old son absolutely adores it. He comes home from school and immediately sticks it in the DVD, he has taken to quoting it (he now responds to direction with a hearty, "AYE AYE, CAP'N!") and he even said, without any prompting, that he loves the (banal, looped) music. I must admit, I'm dumbfounded as to why this has become the one live-action movie that he can sit and watch from beginning to end, because it is far from the pirate version of Spy Kids that I anticipated it to be; nonetheless, he really, really enjoys it and that's all that matters... at last, daddy did good when he bought this one.

This is a great kid movie! Lots of action and funny lines! The kids do a great job and I hope there is more to come from these 3 little stars!

Waiting for Pirate Kids II,

I watched this movie since it was filmed on location in my home state of North Carolina. I wasn't expecting much because I knew it had not been released in the theaters, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much movie the director got out of his budget and how much performance he got from his young talent. The youthful actors in the movie who foil adult pirates act like real kids - not some version of adolescence played by some spoiled Hollywood style of child actors trying to play real kids. If you have young kids (say under 13) who have active imaginations about being heroes, finding treasure, etc., get this movie and play it for them. You can't go wrong. No sex, no cursing, no real violence - this is a movie your kids will like and one that the adults can trust will not be sneaking in something they don't want their young'uns to see or hear.
I hear that Pirate Kids II is almost ready for release. I'll be getting that one too.

A new take on pirate movies you say? With modern day sensibilities and some really likeable child stars you say? Aye Aye I say.
Pirate Kids operates under some very different pretenses. The movie is not a swashbuckling high seas adventure in any sense. It's not a rollicking ride filled with explosions and death at every turn. It doesn't take place in olden times like so many of this genre. It DOES however deliver on a very inventive treasure hunt with villains of a caliber more akin to that of a cheesy Disney movie than that of a serious swashbuckling adventure. It also has lots of heart, and tons of fun along the way. It's an enjoyable and fun film for all ages that just goes to prove you don't need a billion dollar budget and mindless special effects to have a great movie that will even keep the interest of the hardest to please kids.

The Greatest Children's Movie of ALL TIME!! says my niece!,
By Carson Elizabeth "Carson" (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pirate Kids - Blackbeard's Lost Treasure (DVD)
While the budget is obviously low, the director uses every available resource to tell the story. My three year old niece laughed until she cried at times, and cheered with excitement at other times. I recommend this film to any family looking for a fun-filled family night!!

attention getter,
This review is from: Pirate Kids - Blackbeard's Lost Treasure (DVD)
I have children who love to play pirates and search for buried treasures now. This movie has inspired a whole new adventure for them other than video games! Even the language has changed and they now are quoting lines from the movie. It does not take a high budget film to grab the attention of children. This film grabs their attention and they want to watch it over and over again. When is the next one coming out!

It was nice to see a movie that had adventure and mystery that the whole family could enjoy. There was not one thing that any parent could find offensive. Even the villains were cartoonish and the fights were quick and mild. Reminded me of the old "Our Gang" movies where the kids dominate and "save the day." The kids are likable; hope to see more of them.

My son has worn out the DVD,

I bought this on a whim in Family Dollar. My son has been into Pirates since LONG before Disney decided to make the 1st POTC. Like many reviews before me, it wasn't quite the movie I thought it would be. But, it wasn't for me. My then 7 yr old couldn't watch it enough. He'll be 9 in a week & still watches it as much as the actual POTC movies. He can tell you all the lines, hum the music, etc. I have been going nuts trying to find the sequel (which claims to be out). I understand it can only be found at stores like Family Dollar, but I check every week (since they can't tell me what titles will ever come in on a shipment). If ANYONE finds THE SEARCH FOR THE SILVER SKULL, please contact me ASAP. I recommend this movie for any adventurous kid from 7 yrs up (there is a small amount of minor violence - punching). I can be contacted at SinTwistr1@aol.com Thank you.

My 4 yr old grandson likes pirates so I thought this DVD might be ok. It actually is ok, but for an older group. Near the start, the dad gets in a fistfight with a 'robber' and gets a visible black eye. The youth in the story go live with relatives because the mom has died and it would be safer/better away from the home location.
The DVD is very mild by normal standards and it would be great for an older audience, but it is too long (didn't hold his interest) and not good for the younger crowd.
