From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. The brother-sister team who created Pirate Pete (2002) pick up right where the first book left off: Pirate Pete and his faithful parrot sidekick are stranded in a rowboat after a botched treasure hunt. "Oh, I wish I hads [sic] a ship!" Pete moans, and, instantly, a mermaid-genie appears to strike a deal: if Pete finds the missing Sea-Fairy Sapphire and returns it to the sea, then his wish will be granted. Guided by instructions to "follow the sound of thunder," Pete soon locates the magical gem in an island cave. The hitch? The thunder is caused by an angry giant's footsteps, and, once again, Pete narrowly escapes disaster. The silly adventure, the appealing text's frequent rhymes, the repetitive songs, and Pete's salty-dog dialogue make this a natural for reading aloud, and the dramatic, bright acrylic paintings focus on the expressive characters and will show well to a crowd. Lots of fun for pint-size buccaneers. Gillian Engberg

Review

With a touch of Disney-style Little Mermaid in the cartoon pictures and a bit of Br'er Rabbit in the story, this follow-up to Pirate Pete (2002) should keep young mateys anchored to their seats. Slowed down not a whit by his hook and peg-leg, treasure-loving Pirate Pete sets out to recover the stolen Sea-Fairy Sapphire, for which a tiny mermaid sea fairy has promised him a wondrous ship in exchange. He quickly finds out that the Sapphire is guarded by a huge but not too bright giant, who is easily tricked into throwing both pirate and twinkling gemstone into the sea/briar patch. A cheery-looking Neptune and other finny seafolk wave goodbye as Pirate Pete sails off aboard his new ship in search of "jolly good treasure to plunder!" Not the most rousing of pirate adventures, but a relatively nonviolent addition to the fleet. Pirate Pete's Giant Adventure by Kim Kennedy and featuring the illustrations of Doug Kennedy is a remarkable tale of a pirate named Pete and his ultimate journey to take hold of the Sea-Fairy Saffire in exchange for his very own ship. Encountering a multitude of treacherous enemies, including a quite frightful giant, Pirate Pete's Giant Adventure carries young readers through an engaging picturebook story of wit and intrigue as Pete's expert cunning and creative approach to piracy brings to his prize despite a rather gullible giant. An all-around fun story for young readers, Pirate Pete's Giant Adventure is very highly recommended for school and community library picturebook collections.

When my three year old son took an interest in Pirates, I was concerned about the violence in the topic. The Pirate Pete series are sweet books that lack the violence found in other pirate books. My son loves the series and so do I. Cute, cute, cute...

The title makes it pretty self-explanatory. The first one was very cute, with all the different islands. this one takes off with Pete and his pirate sitting in their rowboat after losing their ship. They make a deal with a mermaid to retrieve a jewel for her from Thunder Island, where a Giant is guarding it. Pete is still clever, but humorously flawed, often not paying attention to what the more alert parrot is trying to tell him. The illustrations are nicely done in lovely colors and there's enough mix of pirate for the boys and girly bits for the girls, so both genders of children will enjoy it.

My son loves all books about pirate Pete. He is in his pirate stage now, therefore we have a lot of pirate books. But about Pete are the favorite.

My 3 year old son and 2 year old daughter love the Pirate Pete books, but this one is by far thier favorite. The whole series is great with just the right mix of adventure, Pirate antics and even some girly characters -- Sea faries! The illustrations are top quality and delightful. These books are perfect -- no horrible imagery that would create nightmares-- or subject matters at are too mature for you little ones -- these are great for 6 and under. Well done!

My 3yr old daughter is obsessed with Pirates. Out of all the Pirate books we have, she and I enjoy the Pirate Pete Series the best. And while I enjoy this book the least of all three in the series, it's still a good addition to the library. I read it to her almost bi-weekly and have developed voices for Pirate Pete, his sidekick parrot, the giant and all the other characters. My daughter knows the story and never tires of Pirate Pete (and my) antics.

My 3-1/2 year old son and 6 year old daughter love this book and ask for it over and over again. It's really charming. It's just the right length and complexity. I change the pirate vernacular to regular English (for example, changing "I gots" to "I got") to avoid confusing them, but that's not a big drawback for me.
