Hans Zimmer at his (Pop-Corn) Best,
By
This review is from: Pirates Of The Caribbean: Soundtrack Treasures Collection [4 CD's + 1 DVD] (Audio CD)
I can distinctly remember leaving the theater after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of Black Pearl and being disappointed in the music - the credits claimed the music was written by Klaus Badelt, but I could swear the music was distinctly Zimmer's. Little did I know, the music was actually created by Zimmer - as he himself admits in his interview contained on the DVD, he actually wrote all the important cues of the film and had Badelt polish and finish them off. What then followed was Zimmer's taking over for Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, thus not only bringing the music full circle but creating one of the best blockbuster soundtracks of our time.
Now, don't get me wrong. This is nowhere near The Thin Red Line: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack and its level of gloriousness, but it can match wits with Gladiator any day of the week. This box set, trying to be similar to the Lord of the Rings' Complete Recordings, contains the scores for all three movies, another CD with suits and remixes and most importantly a DVD with two interviews and the 8-minute live performance of the best score cues that preceded the world premiere of the third movie at Disneyland. You may think of the movies what you like, but you cannot ignore the fact that by the third movie Zimmer has created a very rich and meaningful tapestry of music for the wild world of the Pirates' movies. (Of course, this applies only in the context of Zimmer's musical style - if you don't like his type of scores, you won't like this score either.) Simply put, by the third movie there are several incredibly beautiful melodies, all interwoven into a beautiful soundtrack. The disc with the remixes contains nine suits that bring all the aforementioned cues together in a compact way. Especially "Marry Me" saves the listener a lot of jumping about between tracks by playing all versions of the fantastic love theme in succession, creating a heartbreaking 9-minute ode to love. The remixes were mostly featured on different CDs over the time and offer little incentive to buy this set. The suits, on the other hand, are one of the biggest reasons to pay the steep price for this edition. However, the main reason to click on the Buy Now button is the DVD itself. It is not the fullest DVD, as it contains only two interviews - one with Hans Zimmer, Jerry Bruckheimer (producer), Gore Verbinski (director) and Zimmer's staff discussing the movie and music together, and another with Zimmer alone, where he dwells into his process of creating the music and recording it. The second interview is much better than the first, although both are very short (cca. 15 minutes each), but in a world where information about movie scoring is rare, even this is reason enough to buy. And finally there is the live performance which should warm the heart of any music fan. Here the most important melodies are brought to life by the core musicians who recorded them in the first place and seeing the joy on their face while playing is simply incredible. If you liked the Pirates' music and don't own any of scores yet then this should be a no-brainer for you. If, however, you already own the score, you'll have to decide if a few beautiful suits, one good interview and an 8-minute live performance are worth the price. They were for me.

If you own the 3 soundtracks already then I would save your money. I would have preferred if the 3 soundtracks were expanded scores instead what was released before. I would have released full scores for each of the films (a.k.a lord of the rings trilogy) instead of the same albums and tracks as before, then I feel the set will be worth it. Just my 2 cents

8 Score and 70 Bucks ago...,
This review is from: Pirates Of The Caribbean: Soundtrack Treasures Collection [4 CD's + 1 DVD] (Audio CD)
The music from Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt (Remote Control Productions) never cease to amaze. The wonderful scores produced are always nice to listen to and will always be in my favorites.
Though the music is great, this product is just another way for Disney to make money. This boxset is largely unloyal to the fans who have already purchased the 3 original soundtracks. Thoses who enjoy the music from the movies itself. This is in no way Amazon.com's fault, of course. I mean, for example, How many different soundtracks were released of the same songs from Disney's The Lion King and yet no score CD was EVER released. It is incomprehensible that they would do such things. What I am trying to say is, if you have never bought the Original Soundtracks and you like the music overall, then by all means, buy the thing. But, if you're like me, who loved it from the beginning, got all 3 and wanted more music from the movie then maybe you shouldn't get it. The suites are GREAST but, they do NOT have any unreleased cues as I've heard from some places. Here I can give you a quick description. "Pirates, Day One, 4:56am" is a piece of the original demo that Hanz Zimmer wrote for the first pirates which he finnished very early in the morning... "Marry Me" is about 7 mins of the beautiful love theme arranged in many ways (which has the music that plays when Jack yells "Hold On" at the end of the movie, but not the music right before it where the Dutchman's crew chants "Part of the Ship, Part of the Crew"), finnished off with (a previously released song) "Up is Down". "The Heart of Davy Jones" is a nice, lengthy suite of the newer version of the Davy Jones Theme. This is probably the saddest track on here. "Lord Culter Beckett" is, as the title suggests, Becketts Theme which could be remembered more in the OST song "Parley" and in some parts in "Singapore". Very Epic. "Jack's Theme Bare Bones Demo" is the piano demo for the song "Jack Sparrow", slightly shorted. "Hoist the Colours Suite" is the music that played in the end credits of At World's End. But I hear it's slightly different. Epic. "The Pirate Lord of Singapore" is a longer version of the OST song, yes you guessed it, "Singapore". It just has a lot more asiany-singapore stuff (which sounds a lot like The Last Samurai) before it get's epic at the end. "Just Good Business" is... well it's good but I don't know anything about it. An alternate song for the final battle, maybe, or more Beckett Theme music. Well, it sounds like the Beckett's Theme for the whole length of it. Then there is the cut-short, remixes of Jack's Theme and He's a Pirate, which were already released before. All in all, if you really NEED all the music from Pirates of the Caribbean then go ahead. All I'm saying is, it makes no difference anyway, why doesn't Disney release more complete scores of all the great movies that has derived from it so the unhappy fans will stop complaining. I love Disney because they seem to always get great composers but then they NEVER deliver on the public releases. If I could just write to them or something. Hans himself should sell his stuff. If you haven't already noticed, I am a Hans Zimmer fan.
