Editorial Reviews

Taken from Chapter 9: Robbing and Stealing All pirates dreamt of capturing ships filled with gold, silver, and jewels. Most pirates, however, stole anything they could sell, such as tobacco and cotton. They also took tools, food, rope, and medicine, which they needed for themselves. Many pirates took over ships that were carrying slaves. Slaves are people who are captured and forced to work without pay. Some slaves joined the pirates, but most were sold for money. Maps were very valuable. Pirates stole maps to find towns to rob and safe harbors in which to hide. A few pirates may have buried treasure and drawn maps so they could find it later.

5.0 out of 5 stars PIRATES: A great book for young children !, April 13, 2000
The book, Pirates, is a great overveiw about the lives the pirates led. It has wonderful illustrations and kept the interest of my 5-year-old son. It has factual places, events, and pirates. Excellent for young children who have an interest in the robbers of the high seas. ()

5.0 out of 5 stars educational and fun!, February 21, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book was great fun, and educational too. Very nice illustrations on every page, and nice ones too. Book tries to tell what a Pirates life was like in reality, at least the best way you can describe it to an elementary school student. That is the age this book fits best. Has a neat replica of the "Pirates Code of Conduct", which really is the warped honor among thieves rules they went by. Examples of real pirate flags. Briefly touches on a few famous real pirates too.

If you like this one, check the other great book "Cowboys" from this series/publisher. It is even better than this one!
