5.0 out of 5 stars What an imagination!
What an imagination Linda Lael Miller has! Yet once the reader accepts the basic premise of her time-travel fantasy, Miller keeps her story fast-moving and consistent within the premise of that fantasy. Along the way, Linda painlessly has included a fair amount of colonial history--not to mention some spicy love scenes. A fun, escapist read. Hats off to Ms. Miller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, August 21, 1998

I did actually enjoy reading this book for the most part. I found the characters likable and entertaining, but was waiting for some sort of revelation at the end of this book. Nothing. I found the character of Old Woman the most interesting, and she had a pretty important roll in the story.....then her whole character was just sort of abandoned. We never found out her magical name, and it didn't really seem necessary for Phoebe to use it to return to Duncan's time. Afterall, he got there without it. I also thought the character of Alex played too important of a part in the book to have his story wrapped up as an afterthought. Also, *who* was this woman who bought the book about Duncan in the Epilogue?! She should have had some sort of connection rather than just being a stranger. I guess I'm tired of the idea of time travel being used only to get a modern day person into a unique setting. The stories could be so much more interesting and memorable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Why is this author so popular?, April 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pirates (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the second book I have read by her and I just don't understand the fuss. I love historical, timetravel, sci-fi and otherwise offbeat romances and have read many of them. This book is so-so. Her characters are well defined and likeable and the dialogue is entertaining. But the romance has no development - they go from first meeting - to bed - to in love forever in the space of a few brief scenes and there is not much of a plot. Her main character is a "History buff" who worked for several years as a research assistant to an American History professor yet her level of knowledge about the period she is thrown into is right at about the level of your average 4th grader. Better that she had been a Psych. major since she given to offering advice that could have come-out of any pop-self-help book. The author doesn't know much more about the period then the heroine and none of it rang true. All in all it is readable if you don't expect much from it or the author.

I read this book in one day. And I fell in love with Duncan. This was one of the best books I have ever read. I reccomend this to anyone who wants a break from everyday life to live in a fantasy. You'll love it, I promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful time-travel adventure, December 1, 1997
This review is from: Pirates (Mass Market Paperback)
If you like time-travel, romance, adventure and history then this is the book for you. The heroine is sent back in time to the home of the pirate Duncan and there the adventure begins. I loved this book so much that I've just ordered her other two time travels - Knights and Outlaw - from Amazon off course. Libby Withnall

3.0 out of 5 stars Not pleased, May 17, 2011
This review is from: Pirates (Mass Market Paperback)
In the Beginning of the story I was sort of feeling Bad for the heroine, But when she takes the Free Getaway and is suddenly transported to the basement of a notorious, Harp, Piano playing, rebel, pirate fighting the English Rule during the Revolutionary war in the Eighteenth century things just get a little too farfetched. The hero finds this short haired, strangely dressed woman with different language in his basement and within a few chapters he is believing her Time travel story and falling hopelessly, madly in love with her and marrying the chit. There are no questions as to the items he finds in her purse, if it was me I would want to know every detail about the strange items or the fact that "Old Woman" had known he was waiting for her. The heroine is supposed to be a History Buff but really does not know much about the time she was in. She accepts her Transportation so gracefully and without question that it is totally unbelievable, I would be questioning everything and screaming uncontrollably for all the comforts that were now lost to me, however she falls madly in love with him and marries him within days of arriving. The Character Alex played too big of a role in this story as well as the Simone character, However Old woman played a big part of the story but she was sort of a Black Magic artist. The best part of this book was when the Hero and Heroin were transported back to her time in the 1990's it was comical all of the interesting and fascinating things that Duncan was introduced to. Phoebe, the heroine again at the point in the story still had not put up any fuss at all regarding this time travel and instead of her being ecstatic to return to her time she desperately wants to return to his. This story left so many unanswered questions, and feelings regarding each other's time open that I was just not satisfied. I have read other books by her and they were ok it may just be the concept of Time Travel that I have a problem with.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just Terrible, December 13, 2010
This review is from: Pirates (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is abs-freaking-lutely ridiculous. I like pirates and I like time travel, but this book was so incredibly stupid it wasn't even worth the 50 cents I paid for it at a garage sale. The only use I can see for it is to either read out loud dramatically for laughs, or use it to line your birdcage.

This book is absolutely amazing. I never wanted to put it down. You have to be careful - when you put the book down it may take a minute to figure out whether you are "there" or "here".

I really enjoy books on time-travel. This book was the best yet. I was really upset when I was done. Not because it was bad, but because I wanted more! I finished it in two day while telling my kids "uh huh" and "yeah" and having absolutely no idea what they were talking about. It was just an excellent book. I felt like I really knew the characters and I would love to see Linda write a sequel.
