Veiled in humor, but hard not to read as a parable that tweaks narrow minds and parochial attitudes.

It's not at all hard to understand why kids and adults are so keen on Jonny Duddle's two pirate picture books. I would second all of the glowing reviews about the appealing artwork, cheerful vibe, and subtle positive messages in those books.

But, be alert to the next step. Duddle has moved from picture books to heavily illustrated chapter books featuring the Matilda and Jim characters that little readers love from this picture book. So, once you've read this book a zillion times you can move your growing-up reader to "The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon" chapter book and follow even more pirate adventure. That's a great idea and a nice way to have a series grow up along with its fans.

My four year old son has been a pirate fanatic for about a year, so we have about 25 pirate books. I had pre-ordered this for his birthday, even though the release date was about a month later. We have The Pirate Cruncher as well, and we love it. So I figured this book would surely be as good. And it is!

I am always impressed when truly talented children's authors can rhyme stories and mix in humor and sentiment. The illustrations are so colorful, vibrant and cute without being too childish. It's the perfect length as well, so my son is satisfied when we're done, and the story isn't lacking for anything.

I'm excited and hopeful that Johnny Duddle will write another great pirate tale! We'd like to see the Jolly Rogers take on the Pirate Cruncher!

I should have believed the reviews I read on this but I really wanted a pirate book, and the illustrations were great, so I bought it anyway. What a mistake! The neighbors stereotype the pirates and don't want anything to do with them. Their attitudes remind one of something out of the 1950s. Of course, everything changes when the pirates leaves each of them gold. The story was so appalling that I actually made up a story to go with the pictures, rather than reading the text to my granddaughters. I didn't even want to donate the book because I don't think it's appropriate for any children. With so many wonderful picture books to choose from, do yourself a favor and pass on this one.

I picked this up because the front cover made it look like such fun as a boat full of pirates is rolling up the road. I wasn't disappointed on the inside either as the story was great and the pictures a pure delight.

So to the story, there is an empty house on the street in Dull-on-Sea (great name) and one day a pirate family move in complete with pirate ship (which needs mending hence the break from the sea). Tilda next door is very pleased to have a friend in the `pirate boy' but the rest of the neighbourhood are less than welcoming. They come together to moan about the piratey aspects of the new residents. However in reality the pirates are not any of the things that are being said of them. They are actually very wise pirates who know that these people are complaining and, in a cunning twist, they set out to show them that pirates are not actually bad at all by leaving a gift for each of the neighbours. Of course after that everybody loves them!

If you like to use books to talk about issues with your children this is a great way to take an early look at prejudice and not judging people you don't really know.

The illustrations are brilliantly drawn, detailed and humorous. They clearly show the exuberance of the pirates and the complete disapproval of the neighbours as they move in. My girls will tell you that the best of all is the big picture. It shows all the neighbours lawn's marked with crosses (as x marks the spot of course) and you open it out to see them all desperately digging in search of their treasure. There is lots to look at on every page and they are the kind of pictures you keep seeing more things in each time you go back to them.

Verdict: So both the girls and I loved this, written in rhyme means they get to read it with me these days, it is a firm favourite.

This guy is great. Contrary to what some folks think I think the illustrations are top notch, the characters are very interesting, and I wish I could find more books like this for my 3 year old. While the story doesn't have the clever twist that the Pirate Cruncher has it's still quite good. Do yourself a favor and get this book as well as the Pirate Cruncher. Can't be beat for entertaining a little kid and his dad. (Also very fun if you enjoy impersonating peoples voices as I do) Don't get the gripe about the author calling himself a creator, seems quite creative to me. Whatever. GET THIS BOOK!!

My pirate-obesessed three year old loved this book. I love all the small details in the illustrations that are carried throughout the book like trying to find an octopus on almost every page somewhere. Great cadence and rhyme to the story. A few not-so-common words such as galleon, cutlasses, etc, that had to be explained, which is great for vocabulary building. I definitely recommend it.

ok as parent and reader, I love this book. the wording gets a bit sticky at points but the surprise ending is absolutely precious. my son, however, is not interested and I cannot figure it out because he's in a pirate phase. He loves 'How I became a pirate'.. and it's almost as long. and this one has a much better lesson than running off from your parents, just saying.
