I can't think of a better Christmas gift for a child than this book. It is beautifully illustrated, full of color and life with a wonderful tale based on "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." The pictures are rich with detail as the story is told in very clever rhyme and rhythm, full of pirate lingo and charming characters. This book is a fun introduction to poetry for any small child and a lovely picture book for any collection. I look forward to reading this book with the children of all of my friends as their Christmas present.

I bought this book for my 4 year old godson since he loves pirates. He is an incredibly picky kid though and it takes alot to impress him. I gave this book to him on Thanksgiving and he LOVED it! I read it to him atleast 5 times while I was with him and he has his parents reading it to him every night.

This is a very well written children's book and even had the adults laughing. He loved the very colorful interesting pictures and the pirates dictionary in the back ( though he already knew what all the pirate words meant).It's a big hit with him and I'm sure it would be for any child who likes pirates.

I bought this book for my niece's fourth birthday. I read the book myself before giving it to my niece. The book was not only an enjoyable read, but it was beautifully illustrated as well. I LOVED this book and was certain my niece would too. I also bought a pirate's hat to give her along with the book. She loved both the hat and the book!! I'm sure she will enjoy this book for many Christmases to come. I highly recommend this book for all the little pirates out there!

This is an instant "new" classic! The language whirls with wit, revealing anew a beloved classic. What child wouldn't be enthralled with the idea of pirates waiting for old St. Peggedy on Christmas Eve? One of the pirates sleeps in his hammock with his teddy bear, sucking his thumb! These are pirates we can relate to. Sir Peg's sleigh is pulled by sluggish sea horses, with hilarious names such as Salty and Scurvy! Sir Peg, himself, drips with seaweed and eels, and wears a skull hanging from his ear! But is he evil? No Way!!! He has presents for everyone--piratey things, some of which we have no clue as to what they are until we look closely--cackle-fruit eggs, me Hearties? Indeed! And poor little boy watching from the mast, what does he get? Well, you'll have to read it and see, but it's an Xmas prize, for sure! The joyous language, sly wit and spectacular illustrations all make for a wonderful treat. Not to mention the very droll Pirate Glossary at the end. Make this your new family treasure and revisit it every year. I know all the kids on my list are going to be thrilled to receive Philip Yates' latest gift.

With three little boys, aged 6, 4 and 2....this book is a new favorite in our house....so much fun to talk like a pirate, and we love the glossary of pirate terms at the back. The boys chuckle over the "poop" deck , of course!! Very cute book for boys, and I love it too!

Really creative writing and great pictures. I was really happy with this book and enjoyed reading it to my son, he really liked it. Such a cute idea.

I don't often write reviews, but I had to write a review for this book. I add at least one book to our personal library each holiday. I usually purchase a few more at Christmas...just too many to choose from. Since I especially like any interpretation of the traditional "Night Before Christmas" story, I purchased this book for my 3-yr-old son this past Christmas. No need to have any other books to choose from! We literally have about 50 Christmas books to pick from, yet after purchasing this book, my son would ONLY choose this one to have read, over and over and over! He LOVES it! Of course, the fun rhyme and rhythm of the words almost forces you to put your best "pirate" accent on while reading. If I read it as a pirate, well then Dad, brother and sister had to also.

Also, the illustrations are beautiful. I feel illustrations can really make or break a children's book. These illustrations definitely MAKE it.

This book is just plain fun. Granted, not a "traditional" Christmas book, but very entertaining and a must for any "pirate" lover!

What an excellent pirate story for kids! Even as a 38-year old mom I get a chuckle when I read it to my two kids -- especially when read out loud in a pirate accent. This would make a good present for nieces and nephews this Christmas! Kudos to the author and artist -- very creative!!!

Growing up, my mom always read us "The Night Before Christmas" a million times (she has it memorized now). As an adult, I still have a love affair with Christmas but my brother can be a bit of a scrooge. He loves pirates, though - so last year I got him this book to help get him in the Christmas spirit! He actually liked it, and I bought a copy for myself too.
The story has been cleverly altered into a pirate theme while keeping with the cadence and spirit of the original sotry. In addition, the illustrations are beautifully executed at first glance, and upon further examination they are full of sweet details. This is a great book for adults and children alike!

I bought this book to read the night before Christmas to our two boys, ages 4 and 6. They loved it and continue to read it often. It's very cute with all the pirate language!
