From the Back Cover

America's legalized pirates plundered on the high seas to win freedom for their country and a fortune for themselves. Discover the little know story of how 2,000 privately armed Yankee vessels captured sixteen British warships and almost 3,000 merchantmen during the Revolution. This makeshift "civilian navy" crippled British commerce, seized crucial supplies for Washington's army, and earned $50 million for its owners and crew.

5.0 out of 5 stars The colonial revolution at sea !, April 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pirates & Patriots (Illustrated Living History Series) (Paperback)
Graphic and Fact filled paperback is an excellent resource for sand-crabs and sea-dogs alike. Terrific historical references, accurate and well done sketches, and more provide a thorough review of the maritime side of the revolution here in the colonies. Everything from ship types, rigging, gear, weapons (personal and shipboard), maneuvering, signals, 'recruiting', berthing, and more are stuffed into this paperback. Want a recipe for hardtack? Need a pattern for that proper cover (hat)? Wonder what a sailor really did with all that hair at sea? My copy is well dogeared, as I'm reaching for it often when researching material for my theatrical or reenactment characters. For an expatriate Connecticut Yankee, this is also a trip through my own history!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!, July 14, 2006
I recently picked up this book on a tour of the Tall Ship LYNX, a replica privateer or naval schooner. Printed in a font that is reminiscent of a hand-written document, the book reads like an authentic text. Filled with sketches that detail all aspects of the naval schooner - such as block and tackle, sail making, projectiles and "spare time" - it gives great insight into the lives of the privateers that is simple enough for even a landlubber to understand.
