4.0 out of 5 stars An Academic Faith Wisdom, fixed like a Butterfly on a Pin, August 14, 2000
This review is from: Pistis Sophia (Nag Hammadi Studies) (Hardcover)
First of all, this is THE academic presentation of the infamous Pistis Sophia, several combined texts which offer the student of religion a little survey course in what has been called the Gnostic "underbelly of late Neo-Platonism run riot!".

Brill and Company offer expensive, perfectly printed, top-of-the-line Academic publications, and this is their high standard.

But I have to offer a check on your enthusiasm. This translation, while surely beyond reproach, is by a scholar who is not spiritually invested in this kind of material. By that I mean she gives an impersonal perspective while appropriate not necessarily as pertinent as was even G.R.S. Mead's 1921 version, which exposed a Theosophy of the 4th Century to the exposition of a Theosophist of the 20th Century. And,...I would like to seen a second Volume dedicated to support materials. But read in conjunction with the empathetic Mead and later more up to date "serious scholars" this is a must have text.
