Pistola,
By Bjorn Viberg (European Union) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pistola (Audio CD)
Pistola being DeVille's 2008 release and his latest record showcases an artist that marches to his own beat and I must say that I admire this immensely. Songs that stand out on this release are "So So Real", "You Got The World In Your Hands" and "Been there done that". The booklet is really nice with a glossy touch to the paper, quality photos of DeVille and lyrics that are easy to read. For each track we also get a listing of whom plays what. 4/5.

Sad news: Willy Deville died of pancreatic cancer on August 5th, 2009. He was only 58 years old.
A note about this album: I tend to agree with another reviewer here that this wasn't Willy's finest work. That having been stated, there is one gorgeous ballad on this CD: "When I Get Home". It is worth the price of the disc by itself, and it's one of the best things he ever recorded.

Not bad, but not his best,

As a hard-core Willy DeVille fan from back in the day, I have to say that just about everything the man recorded had something I enjoyed. That being said, this final recording from the man is not one of his best; it just seems to lack that unique quality that most of his music had. Definitely worth it, but only after his early Mink DeVille records and his more recent recordings from the 90's and later.

Masterful but filled with sadness,

A great album but one that is also tinged with sadness. Willy's voice sounds weaker than in previous albums, and at times this sounds like his own requiem. A very soulful and gritty record overall - the highlight by far being 'When I Get Home'. Beautiful.
Well worth checking out. A true pioneer.

The Dark Angel,
This review is from: Pistola (Audio CD)
I had the thrill of seeing Willi when he played the Stone in San Francisco back in the 1980's... as Mink Deville. There was something about this skinny guy with the impossible hair-do. He was wicked, dark and yet had a cutting sense of humor about him. I loved the rifts, the urban slang, and the uniqueness of his music.
I rediscoverd him when I was in New Orleans, where I'm told, he lived in the French Quarter for many years. I really loved his new music and really loved his old stuff even more. In some strange nightclub, at the end of time... I'd love to hear Willi, Warren Zevon, and Bruce Cockburn sit down and jam together... what a night that would be!!! IF anyone knows where he might be playing in the SF Bay Area... let me know... [...] |
