Book Description

“What’s new. What else. What next. What’s happened here.”

Pitch Dark is a book about love. Kate Ennis is poised at a critical moment in an affair with a married man. The complications and contradictions pursue her from a house in rural Connecticut to a brownstone apartment in New York City, to a small island off the coast of Washington, to a pitch black night in backcountry Ireland.

Composed in the style of Renata Adler’s celebrated novel Speedboat and displaying her keen journalist’s eye and mastery of language, both simple and sublime, Pitch Dark is a bold and astonishing work of art.

Editorial Reviews

From Bookforum

Pitch Dark is murky—not in a turgid sense, but clouded, rather, by troubled reflections, ambivalence, regrets. The weather of Pitch Dark is chilly. Secondary figures are fraught with shadowed histories. Incidents and asides illustrate a hapless, estranging condition of things. —Gary Indiana

Review

Here Kafka elides into Jane Austen, as that final romantic fragment ... Adler, like Austen, is something of a moralist. There's a gorgeous riff, for instance, in Pitch Dark ...That question of culpability, of responsibility as it relates to all human endeavor, is all over Adler; it's in her work as a media critic, as a movie reviewer, as an investigative journalist, but it's most interesting, I think, in the novels. ... wit and temper, both words which I use in their most far-reaching dimensions; a sense of existence and behavior  that's practically Greek in its feeling for fairness... It isn't Greek, though: it's American ... as much so as Whitman or Dickenson. Like theirs, Adler's feel for the intimate dilemma -- the overflow or underflow of the self --- takes on a grand dimension, enough so that distinctions between the "personal" and "political" seem moot. There's no bottom to these novels, and no end. - Matthew Spektor, The Believer
"The long love affair ending, ended, or maybe not, seeps into narrative cracks, sounds a medley of stuttering refrains. ... The faits divers in Pitch Dark frequently end on these plangent, mournful notes of heartbreak....scenes depicting Kate and her lover, Jake--at night, for instance, after leaving a party, with Jake's wife also in the car--are brilliant." - Gary Indiana, Book Forum

5.0 out of 5 stars Adler is hard to beat July 17, 2014

Brilliant writing, wonderfully jumbled narrative, although the parts of it cohere in the mind. Why can't people write like this anymore?

This is a failed effort by the author to show how "creative" she is - and, in fact, she isn't.

The book came highly recommended, but fell very short for me; just not used to that style writing. Too confusing!
