Book Description

Reviews from popular websites can make or break your product. So why do so many developers throw opportunities away? Some devs work on their apps and hardware for months or years and then send in weak, quickly written pitches that fail to sell their excitement. These two-minute e-mails and months-in-development ideas quickly move from the blogger’s inbox to the trashcan rather than getting featured on the front page of a site.

In this short ebook, you'll learn from experts and noted bloggers Erica Sadun and Steven Sande about the successful pitch. You'll discover how to effectively position and sell your app's story. Sure, you still won't be guaranteed any positive reviews, but you'll learn how to avoid many of the most common pitfalls that send your message off-track.

Remember this: most web site staff members are passionate about good apps and accessories. They want to love your product as much as you do—but if you don't tell them why, your pitch will be lost among the hundreds that sites receive daily. Having your product featured on a top website in a positive light turns sales from lackluster to blockbuster.

This ebook offers simple and practical advice with real-world examples. The topics discussed will help you strengthen the way you think about promotion and marketing. You'll see where other developers have gone wrong and where they've gotten it exactly right, lessons that you can apply to your own marketing efforts with real world examples and success stories.

Written with a sense of humor, Pitch Perfect also features illustrations by The Joy of Tech's Nitrozac and Snaggy that will have you laughing while you learn.

"A must-read for anyone trying to get their app reviewed by the media"
- Aaron Watkins, President - Appency PR

“This book illustrates the intricate relationship between product developers and bloggers so well, that I can almost hear David Attenborough’s disembodied voice narrating the complex dance.”
- Carl E. Moebis @ iBackFlip Studios LLC

“As a long time indie app publisher I felt like someone had finally lifted the veil over what really goes on in the minds of the reviewers at a major blog site.”
- Ken Landau, co-founder, mobileAge, LLC

“Lots of bite-sized action points and for the savvy developer without the massive PR budget, this is Gold”
- Tope Abayomi, AppDesignVault Founder

“This book is fabulous. I wish I would have read it 3 weeks ago. It would have saved me some embarrassment. I haven’t been able to put it down since I started.”
- Jon Fawcett, Jon Fawcett, Owner, [Fuse]Chicken

“[E]very developer probably would benefit by checking out this e-book before approaching a publication with either a press release or a pitch to do a review…These two writers have been there and done it all, so their advice is spot on. Pitch perfect is 235 pages, well written, informative, and has an extensive table of contents.”
- John Martellaro, the Mac Observer

“There are tons of great mobile programming resources but very few great resources for app marketing. Erica and Steve do a fantastic job in their book Pitch Perfect explaining in detail the best way to raise awareness for your indie apps. I have virtual yellow highlighter all over my copy!”
- Elia Freedman, CEO, Infinity Softworks, maker of powerOne calculators

“Because of Perfect Pitch, I now have a glimpse of a bloggers life and can ask myself, “What would I want to see/read if I was in their shoes?” I enjoyed learning from the many real life examples of Do’s and Don’ts, the importance of the subject line, and the structure of a description. I also laughed quite a few times at the comics throughout the book. The comic where the mom reviewed her sons app cracked me up.”
- Saied G, It’s About Time Products LLC

“I bought & gifted “Pitch Perfect” after seeing @macgenie’s tweet last week. Started it today. Condensed wisdom.”
– Mark Fuccio, Tactics Sells High Tech Inc.

This book has approximately 235 pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this before sending out a single pitch! May 20, 2012
By JF
Format:Kindle Edition
I couldn't put this book down once I started it. It will definitely be my reference manual before sending out another pitch to anyone. I only wish I had read it before I made a few of the mistakes mentioned when sending out previous pitches.

I had the good fortune of reading an advance reading copy of this book, and as a long time indie app publisher I felt like someone had finally lifted the veil over what really goes on in the minds of the reviewers at a major blog site. Pitch Perfect does a great job in offering extensive examples, both good and bad (and some very bad) of product email pitches. And then explaining how blog editors view these emails.

There are thousands of new apps being released each week. So how does a developer hope to achieve any level of discoverability? The first step is to design, build and QA a beautiful app that delights in accomplishing its goal. Then get a copy of this book and learn the art of sending emails to the major blogs.

Following their guidelines certainly won't guarantee having your app or peripheral reviewed, but it will certainly increase your chances. For all of my firm's future releases we will definitely be following the book's lessons on how to create an effective pitch email.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this when I released my last App. May 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this very to be a very informative look at what goes on behind the scenes at the review blogs.

I never really knew about the mindset or the time pressure that the pro bloggers work under, and understanding their needs and perspective changes completely how I think about what I should say.

This book is full of step-by-step instructions, and examples of good and bad pitches.

If good exposure is the path to good app sales (and I think it is), and this book is the key to getting good exposure, then this should be required reading for anyone who wants their apps to sell.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great practical advice May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I received an advance copy of this book from the authors, and really enjoyed the book! It was full of practical advice on how you can increase the odds of getting your app reviewed, by a) making sure it's review-worthy, and b) catching the attention of bloggers through a carefully crafted pitch.

My favorite part about the book was it contained a ton of real world examples and pitch templates that you can directly apply when marketing your app. I will definitely be trying out some ideas from the book for my own apps in the future.

The book also has a great sense of humor and was a lot of fun to read. Great job Erica and Steven! :]

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly helpful for app developers June 13, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a fantastic resource for app/game developers who are struggling with their "pitch" -- that is, getting the word out to the world about their product. Erica and Steven have written a concise, readable book that takes you step-by-step through the life and outlook of a typical blogger. The book then goes on to detail the right approach to crafting your pitch emails, including a multitude of real-world examples.

If you're an indie app or game developer, you owe it to yourself to get this book and read it immediately. It may be the single most important thing you do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Condensed wisdom made accessible through stories June 1, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great book. Whether you are begging in promotion your product, someone else's product, OR have decades of experience you can learn or relearn from this e-book.

Why is this book helpful?

First, it describes the environment in which blogger reviewers operate. While you can't suck-up and flatter your way to a great review, you CAN avoid stupid mistakes that can eliminate you from the reviewer's consideration. They have limited time and presented choices between incomplete/hard to review products vs. ones that harmonize with their schedules, well .... guess who wins or loses.

Second, it presents advice for how to think about your product compared to others in the market. Very few are fundamentally different. Steve & Erica provide tough-love to focus on solving a problem, avoiding feature bloat, make an easy to use product as The Way to a successful product and review. Everyone hears this stuff over and over... yet, how many take it to heart and act on this knowledge?

Third, it provides tips for approaching bloggers. These are especially useful if you don't have experience promoting products. OR if you are a jaded old hand, they provide a refresher.

Fourth ... well go buy the book. I doubt you be disappointed. If nothing else, there are good cartoons that you can "repurpose" (aka steal) for your next product promotion project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great guide! January 1, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is super! I enthusiastically read it all the way through and came out with what I think is a really great pitch (which remains to be seen). I certainly would be clueless without it. If you're releasing an iOS app soon you owe it to yourself to pick it up. The ROI on this book is nothing short of astronomical!
