Informative and entertaining explanations and illustrations,

This review is from: Pitch and Throw, Grasp and Know: What Is a Synonym? (Words Are Categorical) (Hardcover)
Energetically illustrated in a colorful cartoon style by Brian Gable, Pitch And Throw, Grasp And Know: What Is A Synonym? provides young readers with informative and entertaining explanations and illustrations of just what synonyms are. Also highly recommended for school and community library collections (and ideal for use by home schoolers) are the other outstanding and thoroughly "kid friendly' titles of the Carolrhoda Books series on the English language: Dearly, Nearly, Insincerely: What Is An Adverb?; Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What Is An Adjective?; I And You And Don't Forget Who: What Is A Pronoun?; A Mink, A Fink, A Skating Rink: What Is A Noun?; To Root, To Toot, To Parachute: What Is A Verb?; Under, Over, By The Clover: What Is A Preposition.

These books are so good at helping kids learn the parts of speech. They give so many clear examples of sentences, with the specific part of speech in a different color so everyone will notice it. I used these in a classroom during english class and they all loved it. A+ to this book!

Great stuff. Interesting word choices. Those crazy cartoon cats. I love how in this series of books which explains synonyms, homonyms, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and more, Cleary can take the complex and make it simple, funny and teachable. He's also written one of my favorite books of poetry-- RAINBOW SOUP; ADVENTURES IN POETRY.

Synonyms to Build On,

This review is from: Pitch and Throw, Grasp and Know (Words Are Categorical) (Paperback)
Cleary's "Words are CATegorical" series aims to teach young students the parts of speech; and language devices such as simile, and metaphor through humor, rhyme, creative story telling, and a zany group of animals. The Synonym book brings together writer Brian Cleary and illustrator Brian Gable, who together raise this already instructional series to a higher level. The format is the same with the concept definition at the beginning, and then page after page of examples. But what really works is that there are more instructional sentences that glue the examples together and summarize the concept, than in previous books. In addition, the rhyme and story telling flows easily, the illustrations pull together the nuances of the similar yet different words that bring an understanding to the depth that word choice can bring to writing. Students come away with a real desire to jump in and start exploring words. You'll notice the difference in their discussions and writing right away.
