Book Description

184511177X 978-1845111779 July 11, 2006
The capture of Manila from the Spanish in October 1762 caused William Pitt the Elder to refer to the General that commanded it, William Draper, as "Manila's gallant conqueror." Draper became a figure of public controversy after becoming the victim of the political satirist "Junius," and incidentally left a lasting legacy from his involvement with drafting the laws of cricket. Using previously unpublished sources, James Dreaper has produced a groundbreaking new assessment of this powerful military figure, and a fascinating portrait of the times in which he served.

5.0 out of 5 stars The life of a forgotten general, August 10, 2010

This review is from: Pitt's 'Gallant Conqueror': The Turbulent Life of Lieutenant General William Draper (Hardcover)
A well written book on a very little known subject - the life of long forgotten General William Draper, conqueror of Spanish Manila. It details the general's life, including the conquest of Manila (though not anywhere near as extensively as, let's say, Blair and Robertson do) and is a vital piece in the puzzle that I've spent years completing - the story of the failed British conquest of the Philippines.
