Aquinas "summa" (celestial heights, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pitts: Seven Letters (Audio CD)
Having got the Dreamland CD produced by Hyperion (a collection of modern choral pieces), I came across Antony Pitts and found his rendition of Aquinas' Adore te to be trully beautiful - matching the sublimity of the words. So, I purchased this CD and have not been disappointed. We have the easy to sing and beautiful "Adoro te" to a more difficult but yet beautiful "Our Father" to the easy to sing and jaunty tune "The first and the Last" to the "Seven Letters" (from the Book of the Apocalype) with its beautiful interweaving of recitative and melody (this is really a great example of how great modern choral music can be). We then move on to the lovely love song "O love" to "O Wisdom of God", an antiphon for Advent, less tuneful but keep listening and sing along with the "Come Lord Jesu". The "O holy of Holies" is a difficult but quite beautiful piece and the last piece "Amen" is likewise beautiful. I cannot praise this music enough combining beauty, singability (at times) with technical brilliance. And, Antony Pitts himself if to be commended, havng resigned his job with the BBC following the broadcast of the blasphemous "Jerry Springer, the Opera". Thus, his music is rooted in his faith.
