THE NEW SOUND OF HORROR,
By Mark Eakes (Lompoc, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Piume De Cristallo (Audio CD)
After creating a new style of scoring with the DOLLAR movies, Morricone moved on to another genre that had become bogged down with cliches and many Bernard Herrmann imitators. Instead of the strings that accompany so many scary scenes, Morricone's approach was more jazzy, and almost sounded drug-induced. Under scenes of violence (most against women) he employed heavy male and/or female breathing and/or a lullabye style theme, all of which created a very unsettling effect, and one that would soon be imitated to death, much like his western scores. I give this 4 1/2 really.
