5.0 out of 5 stars We love Buzz!
My son has been a huge Buzz Lightyear fan for a couple years now. Since my son just turned 8, he is about to outgrow him, but we decided to buy just one more Buzz for Christmas. Buzz has been worth every dime! He does take a lot of batteries... 3 in his back, 4 in each leg and 3 more in the remote. Yes, that is 14 batteries! But he thinks he's a real space ranger...

1.0 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY, July 1, 2010

Okay, we saw this Buzz at Target and we just had to have it. In demo mode he appears to do everything. We bought him to save for Christmas 2010, thankfully we decided to test him based on the mixed reviews on Amazon to ensure that he worked correctly. Glad we did. In demo at the store I believe he dances his Spanish dance and I thought that he even spoke Spanish (I may be wrong on this one), anyway I really don't have anything positive to say about this toy so here is what I think.

1. Overpriced!
2. Wings don't pop out or light up (like in the lower priced $25 model sold at the Disney Store See "Advanced Talking Buzz Lightyear Action Figure -- 12'' (Item # 200855P )" P.S. Beware there are like 50,000 (slight exaggeration) Different variations of the Buzz lightyear 12" figure out there that all do different things.
3. Will only "walk" on hard surface. And programming him requires a degree in rocket science (Pun intended).
4. Manual stinks
5. He seems too fragile to be a kid's toy.
6. Quality Control stinks (Heard a piece of plastic rattling around inside after removing him from the box.)

The $25 one at the Disney store does it all. In fact here is a list of all the things that the $125 Buzz DOES NOT do that the $25 Buzz DOES DO.

$25 Dollar Buzz Functions:
* Press button for wing release (wow just like the movie!)
* Push button to retract helmet (wow just like the movie!)
* Wing tips, wing housing and wrist light up (wow just like the movie!)
* Fully articulated with lots of poseable joints ( $125 Buzz seem too fragile to pose)
* Press button on wings to activate Buzz's arm karate chop (wow just like the movie!)
* Actual movie size 12'' (wow just like the movie!)
* Requires 2 AA batteries, included (the plethora of batteries required to the $125 dollar Buzz are not included. (Wow just like the movie!)

I really hope this review helps at least one person avoid the disappointment that we felt when we bought this piece of junk. Save money and by the $25 real Advanced Talking Buzz Light Year at Disney.

5.0 out of 5 stars We love Buzz!, December 26, 2009

My son has been a huge Buzz Lightyear fan for a couple years now. Since my son just turned 8, he is about to outgrow him, but we decided to buy just one more Buzz for Christmas. Buzz has been worth every dime! He does take a lot of batteries... 3 in his back, 4 in each leg and 3 more in the remote. Yes, that is 14 batteries! But he thinks he's a real space ranger (until you tell him otherwise). He will give a high five, he walks forward and backward (which my kids call moonwalking). He has 4 play modes, voice command, program by puppeteering, remote control and direct button activation. Best of all, he has Tim Allens voice (unlike some of the recent Buzz Lightyears out there). It's only been 24 hours, so I can't speak for durability, but it's been played with nonstop since it's been opened. This was my son's favorite toy this Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is last years model! Does not speak spanish or dance [Updated version is at Target Store as of 12/28/2010], December 28, 2010
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ultimate Buzz Lightyear (Toy)
To all concerned, this version on Amazon of the Ultimate Buzz Lightyear is last years model, and the description here on Amazon is incorrect. The info is for the newer version, but the product in the pictures is the older version. People who have ordered this here got the older version. This OLDER version DOES NOT SPEAK SPANISH and DOES NOT DANCE TO SPANISH MUSIC. This version here is the first version that came out in 2009. The newest version is being sold at Target. The one at Target does speak Spanish and does dance to Spanish music. Whats so confusing is they both have the exact same name. The new version has no info on the box stating it is a newer updated version.[How nice of them to keep this info from us]. The new version does say right on the box that it speaks Spanish and English and dances to Spanish music. That is your only clue that it is the newer version. To Amazon.com, When you start selling the NEWEST VERSION, post a notice that it IS the newest version, or a link to the newer version like you do with other electronics like cameras ect. I hope this helps all who needed this info. I'm still giving the toy 5 stars because both versions are still a very cool toy. M.B.

This Buzz is absolutely awesome! I bought this for my 10 year old that's autistic and is obsessed with Toy Story. I admit in my haste Christmas morning I struggled to get him to work in play mode, as did a previous reviewer. I quickly discovered that, sure enough, I had neglected to supply all of the battery compartments. Once that was resolved Buzz truly came to life. My son spent the whole day learning to master this toy. We live on a super tight budget and a cool $100 on a toy is unheardof in this house. Still, I thought if it was what I hoped it would be for him, it'd be worth it. Well, Buzz turned out to be even better than I'd anticipated and Amazon even beat Sam's price on this guy for the holidays. Many thanks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is, but the price is much too high, October 19, 2010

= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

My 7 year old son saved up and bought this Buzz Lightyear for himself. It's been 5 weeks since purchase.

Pros:
* Well constructed, very sturdy. Also very heavy! Mechanical movements are smooth. So far has stood up to plenty of kid-handling.
* Enjoy that Buzz has different modes - thinks he's a Space Ranger, knows he's a toy, speaks in Spanish.
* Fun to program sequences of movements (more about this in the Cons).
* Buzz will respond to certain spoken phrases, as well as continue his chatter/movements in reaction to any speaking. Fun to set Buzz and Woody toys up and let them chat with each other. Pretty funny! yep, we also have the Collector's Edition Woody. That is a good toy!)

Cons:
* The price! The Price!! THE PRICE!!! For the amount of fun, I'd say it's overpriced by 2 to 3 times. The weight and construction and motors are all high quality, but isn't it supposed to really be about the fun? Naïve, I know...)
* A lot of the fun is lost when the remote control gets lost. And the remote has been lost for awhile now... probably best to keep it in a pouch around Buzz's neck when not using it)
* Motor noises are loud enough that I need to be in a different room from Buzz while talking on the phone. Also, no volume control for sounds.
* Programmed sequences get wiped out every time Buzz is turned off.
* Not fun to hold or carry. He's a big, heavy, hard plastic toy that will suddenly move his arms, legs and torso so you never really know where to hold him - I wonder if it's possible to get a hand/finger pinched in his mid section when he's moving about, but hasn't happened here as of yet. Picking him up kind of reminds me of the time I picked up a snapping turtle by it's shell to get it out of the middle of busy road.

As a well made toy that does exactly what it says it will, I'd give it 5 Stars.

As a fun plaything that holds attention and is engaging, I'd give it 3 Stars.

As a movie marketing tie-in that encourages kids/families to pay excessive amounts of money for a toy that frankly doesn't do all that much based upon the lovable Buzz character, I'd give it 1 Star. Or less.

So, out of deference to my son, who says that he still loves Buzz, I'm rating it 4 Stars - for now. We'll see how it holds up.

(Remember Tom Hanks' character in "Big"? When adult-Josh was working at the toy company and was unimpressed about toys that didn't do very much - "what's the fun in that?", or something along those lines. Hmm... Luckily, the soft squishy Woody with pull string is much more fun and much less expensive.)

I got this for my kid on Black Friday with the intention of giving this to him for Christmas - Mom Fail (1) letting your kid see your packages Mom Fail (2) Giving in to his whine

Why I gave in? He kept trying to push the buttons (there's a hole cute out in the box) and he would smile and giggle whenever Buzz said something, or his laser beam would make noise, I'm a sucker (I know I know)....And also (shhh...don't tell anyone) I too wanted to play with Buzz.

Start off with the no likes
DOES NOT WORK ON CARPET (At least not mine - berber) but works smoothly on wood floors and our coffee table
Wish they made a remote control Woody
Wish they gave batteries for the remote (Buzz comes with batteries installed)
The price tag is steep - if it wasn't a black friday deal, I don't think I'd be willing to shell out the loot
Wish it was interactive w/voice commands

THE LOVE LIST:
Teaches my kid about coordination - he has to figure it out to work the remotes
He had instant character recognition (has opted to take Buzz to bed)
When he fell off the coffee table (Buzz not my kid) he has some funny sayings - crash landing
You don't need the remote to make him talk
Programmable movements - but can only save 1 set at a time, every time you program a new move, it'll delete the previous
It sounds like Buzz
The helmet shield goes up and down (my kid gave Buzz a kiss after he fell - boo boo).

I can't help but love it b/c my 2 year old is having so much fun with it - he's also learning to share with me for the toy!! He loves pushing the button, holds Buzz when he's watching Toy Story (which is on 24/7 at our house, either the 1st, 2nd or 3rd one) He fell asleep with Buzz last night, took Buzz with him to nap, he wakes up asking for Buzz, he's been feeding buzz cereal. It takes ALOT to distract him from Thomas the Train and this Buzz has been that.

i liked the buzz but was a little disappointed when my son opened him up and his mouth didn't work. This is the second one i've bought that something didn't work on him. the last one i bought, his arm fell off and his eyes didn't work. i didn't bother with returning it b/c my son loved it and it wasn't worth the hassle.

This particular Buzz Lightyear does not have a dance mode or speak in Spanish. My son wanted the Spanish speaking one and some of the representations by the seller for this item are untrue.
