Just one more thing to strap on the bat belt.

What I love about using them is not only the extended battery life, but the faster flash recharge time.

This item is an external battery pack used to both (1) speed up the recycle times of your flash by using the 4 internal batteries of your flash + 4 or 8 from this flash, and (2) extend the battery time of your flash (12 AA = more life than 4 AA).

Before this was available, I bought the official Canon CP-E4 Compact Battery Pack - this is about 2-3x the price of the Pixel pack, and is surprisingly not as good! With the canon, you needed to have 8AA charged and inserted for it to function (this Pixel pack will work off of 4AA or 8AA), it also acted more as an extended battery for your flash, and while it DID speed up the recycle times, it wasn't nearly as much as the Pixel pack.

The reason I got the pixel pack were the claims of MUCH faster recycle times (recycle times are when the flash goes off.. the time it takes to charge up to Ready status again). If you're using 1/8 or lower power, you probably don't need this. If you're using 1/2 or 1/1 power often and need to get a few quick flashes in without waiting the 2-4 seconds for it to recycle, this is an amazing item!

The Pixel pack only works on certain speedlights - it has to have the input on the flash (the 580EXII does, the 430EXII doesn't). I use this with the YONGNUO YN560 and CANON 580EXII - works great on both.

The item consists of 3 parts - the plastic battery pack w/ cord (to connect to your flash), a nylon pouch and a battery tray. The battery tray holds the 4-8AA batteries and inserts into the plastic pack. The nylon pouch is optional, but highly recommended (it includes a loop to connect it to your belt (if on the go) or hang it from a lightstand (if a remote flash).

First off I loaded this unit up, attached to my Speedlight, and never changed batteries once during an entire wedding. Rock solid performance, easy to load and unload batteries, nice unit. I love seeing the red blinking lights to know what is happening. Make sure you read that part on HOW it works. The lights blink rapidly means it has juice and is ready to go, they blink slow means change batteries, and when it is solid it is actively charging the flash.

The one caveat is you cannot use this unit with the 580 EXII in the custom function mode that charges the flash from the external battery pack only. I attempted to use this feature 3 times and everytime the lights just kept blinking fast and once the flash was discharged (I did a test fire with pilot button) it never went solid to indicate it was charging. However, once I changed it back to the default to charge from all available sources, it went back to working like a charm. So just make sure you don't have that function enabled.

I purchase three of these battery packs to power my Canon Speedlites (2-550EX & 1- 580 EXII) for a church Christmas program. I took over 400 pictures of kids with Santa and never had a single problem. The Speedlites recycled quickly and the batteries held up very well (I used the eight battery configuration). When the event was over, the AA batteries tested with about 40% power remaining in each one. Cables from the pack to the flash fit very well and snug - cables are of good quality. Overall quality for the money is most acceptable.

I was pleased with the Pixel TD-381 and consider it a good buy.

A power pack is only as good as the batteries you put in it. Put high quality rechargables in this and your flash (I use Sanyo Eneloops) and you'll get ridiculously fast recycle times on full power flashes. Just be careful you don't burn out your expensive flash unit with all this rapid firing! Hundreds of shots taken and not a single miss. Easily fits on a belt or in a deep pocket.

The quality is just fine - it's a battery pack after all. The cable is what's important and the one on the Pixel has strain reliefs on both ends and the jack fits securely into the Speedlite and has a moisture seal.

My only complaint was that although there is a belt loop on the case (taking it on and off your belt or just stuffing it into a pocket can be a pain)there was no clip. A couple of minutes with a belt clip off a tape measure and a pop rivet and - problem solved. See the picture above. Now I can clip it on and off quick and easy.

As for power it's just awesome. I was in a club last night shooting a band. Took 750 flash shots, most in rapid succession, without a hitch or any noticeable drop in recycle times. The battery power on Maha Powerex 2700 MAH AAs only dropped to 1.29 Volts.

Buy one and never miss a shot again due to no flash power.

I bought this thinking I probably wouldn't like it & would return it because it's so much cheaper than the Canon battery pack. I couldn't have been more mistaken. It's super easy to use, it recyles my flash instantly and I never miss a shot because of flash problems. I use a Nissin Pro Di866 flash with my Canon 1DMKIV for night football games here in Texas where the stadium lights are unpredictable and it's absolutely terrific. I use the Maha Powerex 2700 NiMH batteries & charger & I can shoot two games with one charge. I can buy two of these & still spend less than the Canon CP-E4 and it works flawlessly. You just can't beat it for price/performance/value
