Suprisingly fun and addictive to play - 5 Stars, October 7, 2009

If you have never played PixelJunkMonsters before then don't judge it only by the screenshots because it is really fun to play. It is this game where you can build all these different defense towers in order to beat your opponents and protect your creatures. I found the game to be a good buy and was quite challenging to beat, especially if you try to get all the rainbows by beating them without losing one of your creatures to one of the many different type of Monsters that will try to attack. For the price you can't beat it!

For a few years, I was hooked on Desktop Tower Defense. Even for as long as I played, I'll admit that I wasn't that good, and my scores were pretty laughable compared to experts', but I loved that game. Tower defense titles aren't the kind of games that I play much of, because they're usually so under the radar that I never hear about them, but when a good one pops up, it'll keep me interested for a long time. PixelJunk Monsters is no exception. I got this game just 2 days after Super Street Fighter 4 arrived, a game that I had been waiting since December to play. What happened? PixelJunk Monsters has had 90% of my attention for games ever since. What's funny is PixelJunk Shooter did the same thing- I started up Dead Space, but Shooter had me hooked instantly. Can the PixelJunk team do anything bad?
If you can't tell already, PixelJunk Monsters is a tower defense game. You play as this little witch doctor-lookin' guy, running around the battlefield, setting up attack towers wherever trees are, protecting people/your base from the enemy. There's a pretty good selection of weapons to set up, like arrows, cannons, lasers, little bat-guys, and more. Essentially, it's no different from your regular tower defense game, but my god is it addictive. You get a rainbow whenever you get 100% on a stage, which is MUCH easier than it sounds, even on the 'casual' difficulty. There were so many times when I'd restart a stage because I was sure I could do better, even if just one of my villagers got taken out, and even if I had been playing that level for over 15 minutes. And you know what? I never got frustrated when doing so. Maybe it was the relaxing music, maybe it was the simple yet kinda cute graphics, I don't know. As you defeat enemies, you'll earn coins to buy more towers, and also little blue gems to upgrade towers or buy new, more powerful ones. You can also upgrade your towers by standing next to them and dancing, but it takes longer to upgrade them each time they level up, and you'll still be under attack while doing it.
There's a good number of levels here, and for the price it's currently at, you really can't go wrong with PixelJunk Monsters. But there's also the expansion pack that adds even more replay, and I'm hearing about an eventual second expansion pack that includes online co-op. The game also has trophy support, though you have to really work hard to earn most of them.
The game's graphics aren't anything special, and it could've probably been done on the Dreamcast, but everything looks good and gets the job done. The colors consist of a lot of greens and browns, and in some ways, it's relaxing to look at. The soundtrack is limited, and there aren't many sound effects aside from towers and the sounds enemies make when they die, but again, you're probably not playing a tower defense game to be blown away by the visuals and music.
I enjoyed every minute of PixelJunk Monsters, and will be getting Encore very soon. The game will keep the attention of any strategy fan for a long time, and getting perfect scores on every stage takes time. Try out the demo and see how you like it.

A great Co-op game!, January 22, 2010

This game is awesome! It is simple to learn and will instantly get you hooked. It is addicting, challenging, and unique. The game is great playing solo but if you have another person with you, then this is a really good co-op game to play! You work together as a team building towers to defend the village. Co-op plays exactly how you would play if you were playing by yourself except each player has their own set of coins to build whatever kind of tower they want or collaborate and strategize together on how best to defeat the monsters and clear the level. So, if you are looking for more co-op games to play, please give this one a try - you won't be disappointed! Even if you don't have someone to play with, this game is probably the best PSN game out there!
