5.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly fun and addictive to play - 5 Stars, October 7, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: PixelJunk Monsters [Online Game Code - Full Game] (Software Download)
If you have never played PixelJunkMonsters before then don't judge it only by the screenshots because it is really fun to play. It is this game where you can build all these different defense towers in order to beat your opponents and protect your creatures. I found the game to be a good buy and was quite challenging to beat, especially if you try to get all the rainbows by beating them without losing one of your creatures to one of the many different type of Monsters that will try to attack. For the price you can't beat it!

For a few years, I was hooked on Desktop Tower Defense. Even for as long as I played, I'll admit that I wasn't that good, and my scores were pretty laughable compared to experts', but I loved that game. Tower defense titles aren't the kind of games that I play much of, because they're usually so under the radar that I never hear about them, but when a good one pops up, it'll keep me interested for a long time. PixelJunk Monsters is no exception. I got this game just 2 days after Super Street Fighter 4 arrived, a game that I had been waiting since December to play. What happened? PixelJunk Monsters has had 90% of my attention for games ever since. What's funny is PixelJunk Shooter did the same thing- I started up Dead Space, but Shooter had me hooked instantly. Can the PixelJunk team do anything bad?

If you can't tell already, PixelJunk Monsters is a tower defense game. You play as this little witch doctor-lookin' guy, running around the battlefield, setting up attack towers wherever trees are, protecting people/your base from the enemy. There's a pretty good selection of weapons to set up, like arrows, cannons, lasers, little bat-guys, and more. Essentially, it's no different from your regular tower defense game, but my god is it addictive. You get a rainbow whenever you get 100% on a stage, which is MUCH easier than it sounds, even on the 'casual' difficulty. There were so many times when I'd restart a stage because I was sure I could do better, even if just one of my villagers got taken out, and even if I had been playing that level for over 15 minutes. And you know what? I never got frustrated when doing so. Maybe it was the relaxing music, maybe it was the simple yet kinda cute graphics, I don't know. As you defeat enemies, you'll earn coins to buy more towers, and also little blue gems to upgrade towers or buy new, more powerful ones. You can also upgrade your towers by standing next to them and dancing, but it takes longer to upgrade them each time they level up, and you'll still be under attack while doing it.

There's a good number of levels here, and for the price it's currently at, you really can't go wrong with PixelJunk Monsters. But there's also the expansion pack that adds even more replay, and I'm hearing about an eventual second expansion pack that includes online co-op. The game also has trophy support, though you have to really work hard to earn most of them.

The game's graphics aren't anything special, and it could've probably been done on the Dreamcast, but everything looks good and gets the job done. The colors consist of a lot of greens and browns, and in some ways, it's relaxing to look at. The soundtrack is limited, and there aren't many sound effects aside from towers and the sounds enemies make when they die, but again, you're probably not playing a tower defense game to be blown away by the visuals and music.

I enjoyed every minute of PixelJunk Monsters, and will be getting Encore very soon. The game will keep the attention of any strategy fan for a long time, and getting perfect scores on every stage takes time. Try out the demo and see how you like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Co-op game!, January 22, 2010

This game is awesome! It is simple to learn and will instantly get you hooked. It is addicting, challenging, and unique. The game is great playing solo but if you have another person with you, then this is a really good co-op game to play! You work together as a team building towers to defend the village. Co-op plays exactly how you would play if you were playing by yourself except each player has their own set of coins to build whatever kind of tower they want or collaborate and strategize together on how best to defeat the monsters and clear the level. So, if you are looking for more co-op games to play, please give this one a try - you won't be disappointed! Even if you don't have someone to play with, this game is probably the best PSN game out there!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty picky/mature gamer, December 12, 2010

This is a great game that reminds me of what it was like to go the video game rental place as a child and spend ample amount of time finding a new game like Kirby and taking it home and just being enthralled with it. All of your problems seem to melt away as you're drawn into the simple, but seamless world filled with all kinds of monsters and treasures. The basic principle of the game is to build towers to fight off the marching monsters in hopes that as many of your tiki-like mask wearing children will survive. As there are all different kinds of monsters there are also all different kinds of towers which need to be placed just right if you're going to have a flawless victory. Game tip: dancing, which how you upgrade your towers, is essential to getting a rainbow for a flawless victory.

I find this game a lot of fun and very addictive. It's a tower defense game. The animated monsters are very cute and the noise they make when your kill them is funny. I think this game also offers a 2 person co-op mode which could be a lot of fun, a nice way to trick your kids/wife into playing videogames with you while keeping quiet :)

This game also offers an online mode where in you can compare your scores against all the other players online and earn trophies too. The background music is pleasing and it increases pace as more and more monsters start coming towards your nest/cave... a nice touch I think. The multiple kinds of available towers are fun ... the best tower against ground monsters is the fire cannon IMO, and the best tower against the air monsters is the laser tower(can't remember the exact name as its been a while since I played this). Of all the PSN games I have purchased so far, this is definitely the best! High Velocity Bowling would be the second best on my list. I remember playing Pixeljunk Monsters until 2AM for the first few weeks after getting this game... totally worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a million dollars, October 7, 2009
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

In my opinion this is one of the best games I have played in the past 5 years. It's a steal at 10. It's a tower defense game (google desktop tower defense) where you protect your village of 20 people. You run around and turn trees into turrets. You can make over 10 different types. Ground only, Air only, Ground & Air, etc. You can dance over the turret to upgrade them, or spend rare gems that upgrade the towers much quicker. There is tons of strategy you can use in this game. Do you buy a bunch of weak arrow towers? Do you save your money for some of the better towers? Do you spend all your time upgrading one tower, or do you upgrade all the towers equally?

This game can be played with two people locally. My wife even loves to play it. Another great feature is that you can play your music that you have saved on your PS3 while you play the game.

Bottom line, get this game.

P.S. Don't forget to buy the expansion pack.

Love this game! It's extremely addictive and the level of challenge is great. If you're not going for "Perfect clears" (which you don't need) its not very hard. Generally all reviews for this are great as well. I thinkl some people don't buy it because of the cartoony art style. For $10 (heck, I'd pay $70 for a sequel now) you gotta get it. Try the demo right away!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't stop playing, July 27, 2010

PixelJunk Monsters has me addicted. It's a Tower Defense style game. I found out about Tower Defense games from playing 3d Dot Heroes, which has a Tower Defense mini game. I wanted more Tower Defense, so I searched and found PixelJunk Monsters.

Since I installed this game, I have stopped playing 3d Dot Heroes and all my other PS3 games and play this one exclusively.

For those not familiar with Tower Defense style games, the goal is to stop monsters from killing off your villagers. The goal is to set up various towers to defeat waves of advancing enemies. There are several towers to choose from, including a fire tower, laser tower, and cannon tower. Each tower has its plusses and minuses. Certain towers work better on certain enemies. Part of the fun for me was figuring out which combination of towers works the best.

The monsters include spiders, a sasquatch-esque creature, and bats. As the levels become more difficult, the enemies become more plentiful and stronger.

If you manage to save all the villagers (I estimate about 20), you get a rainbow. After getting a certain number of rainbows, you can move on to the higher levels. One plus, is that you don't need to earn rainbows on each level in order to advance, so if you don't earn a rainbow on a particularly difficult lever, this doesn't stop you from advancing.

I adore this game and can't wait to buy the expansion pack.

This game is what put the company Pixel Junk on the map. It's cute, addictive, challenging, and yet...not that hard to beat. The real pull of the game (which you may not notice till you get further) is to try to get a perfect by not letting any monsters past at all (normally the 20th monster to get past is losing that level). Trying to upgrade the right towers at the right times is very rewarding. Playing it 2 player is even better. If you like any tower defense games, then you should get it.

Don't forget, they have an add-on pack called "Pixel junk Monsters Encore" which adds more maps and a lot more fun!

And after you've beaten both games there is a 3rd island that you imput any code and it gives you a random level that you've already played, but with random monsters in it (more fun than you think).

This little gem has cost me HOURS of my life. My buddies and I will stay up all night playing. I would easily buck up money for another expansion. My only wish is that they had online coop play.
