Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Pixies fans are advised to spend a loudquietloud evening with their favorite band courtesy of this film of a rare event: the Pixies performing in a small venue in their hometown of Boston. Club Date captures the band in 2004 as they re-formed after a 10-year split. In contrast to The Pixies - Sell Out which is also from their 2004 reunion tour and features the band playing before massive crowds at sold-out festivals, Club Date is a more intimate experience, but no less energetic. As they emerge to start the 29-song set with "La La Love You," the band is visibly relaxed and seem at home. There's no hint at all of the ten year break or any acrimony that caused the band's split years before. Feeding off the enthusiasm from the small but vocal crowd, the Pixies' set builds in intensity as they rip through their hits. While their most driven and powerful songs like "Something Against You," "Vamos," and "Tame" may not make the crowd mosh and go as crazy as they once would have, the power is still there, and when they launch into the opening chords of "U-Mass" it’s clear that the magic is still there as well, it’s just the magicians are a little older and wiser. For Pixies fans who never had the chance to see their favorite band in a small venue, this is the next best thing. The bonus features is a showcase of a never-before-seen set of one of the band's first performances in 1986. The footage itself is far from topnotch, but fans will likely enjoy hearing some early performances of Pixies standards while witnessing the early days of a seminal group whose best years are yet ahead of them. --Daniel Vancini

Product Description

The Pixies are one of the most influential American acts of all time. Initially spanning the late eighties and early nineties they created the blueprint for alternative rock that would be followed and embellished upon by everyone from grunge to Britpop. After 10 years apart the Pixies reformed in 2004. This DVD is the second release in our Club Date series and features the Pixies in the intimate Paradise Club in Boston.

5.0 out of 5 stars so f'n brilliant!, November 11, 2006
This review is from: The Pixies - Club Date: Live at the Paradise in Boston (DVD)
They're jovial and chatty fun as there set begins, and it's great to see and listen to. There "been all around the world" is new and brilliant. Then they lay into the heavy meat of there songs, and unload with full force. I loved that they played "sad punk." They were really "on" and got deep into it, this night. They prove themselves to be America's best and most interesting band, right here. This is the best of there three concert dvd's. It's wild to see them in the bonus 1986 concert (on bad tape) looking so young, yet sounding so good. A real treat. Pixies ecstacy. If you're into good music, get this.

Very good DVD for all Pixies fans - the gig is small thus provides a nice intermit setting and the crowd are good (is that Perry Farrell in the crowd?) - anyway buy this if you are a "real" fan of Bostons best band ever! LONG LIVE THE PIXIES !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting warm up gig., February 13, 2011

This review is from: The Pixies - Club Date: Live at the Paradise in Boston (DVD)
Club Date is an interesting and entertaining film from a warm up show prior to their reunion tour in 2004. The picture and sound quality is surprisingly good for a show like this and is very watchable. If you are expecting a polished concert tour quality show you might not like this but I liked it all the more for it's imperfections. You see more about of the human element in the band through their stumbles and miscues. We always get to see movies made from well executed concert footage, it is fun to see a band before they are up to full speed.
