The best way to describe the Pixter is to call it a cross between an Etch A Sketch and a Game Boy. The handheld unit features sound effects, music, and a variety of art projects and games. The graphic display is monochromatic and not as detailed as the latest state-of-the-art video games. But the gameplay and art activities (four are included with the unit, and more are available on the included Action Art cartridge) are plenty of fun and easy to get hooked on. The adjustable volume setting and the mute option make this a good toy for bringing along on trips.

I have 2 children, 11 and 6 and they both LOVE this item. It is great in the car and they use it more than their Gameboys. A four hour trip in the car goes so fast as long as we remember our Pixters. Pixter helps with imagaination as well as has educational games in it. My children can't wait for more software to come out.

My six year old used her own money for this, and although she is having fun with it, she thinks she could have gotten more for her money. It will probably be used on an upcoming car trip, and perhaps the addition of some of the software (although a few of the titles already seem to young for her)will help it see more use. Otherwise, not as fun and less creative than markers and paper (and more expensive). Getting enough pictures made to use the animation software can be tedious, but rewarding. Fun toy but not a great value.

I have two boys, ages 5 1/2 and 7 1/2, they bothe love this toy! So do they're friends. Our youngest son got it last christmas and this is one of the few toys he still plays with. We took it with us to soccer games to keep one busy while the other played his game. Not only did it keep our boys occupied, it held the interest of their friends as well. It is also great on car trips and the sound can be turned way down or off so it isn't too annoying. We have several of the additional cartridges and look forward to getting more. I recommend getting the available case to carry it in so you won't need to worry aboout it getting damaged when not in use. I'd highly recommend it as a gift for young children.
