Book Description

May 18, 1999 3 and upP and upStep into Reading
Pizza is fun to make. Pizza Pat stretches the floppy dough, puts on the gloppy tomatoes, adds the sloppy sausages, sprinkles on the cheese, and then pops it in the oven. But just before he cuts into his delicious pizza pie, he turns his back for one second--and the pizza disappears! A gang of hungry mice have taken Pat's irresistible creation away for themselves. Kids love pizza, and this cumulative Step 1 book, based on the poem "The House That Jack Built", will whet their appetites for both pizza and books!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 Set to the familiar rhythm and cumulative rhyme pattern of "This Is the House That Jack Built," this beginning reader describes the sloppy cheese, spicy sausages, gloppy sauce, and floppy dough that are cooked into a pizza and enjoyed by dozens of mice, much to the cook's great disappointment. However, in order to make the rhyme work, the pizza is cooked in a "tray" rather than a pan, and the sausages are described as "choppy." Also, some of the words are not easy for beginning readers. Still, children will be carried along by the rhythm and the lively, colorful, and somewhat exaggerated illustrations. Kristina Aaronson, Bethel Elementary School Library, VT

My 21/2 year old loves this book. I read it over and over to her. Then she reads the pictures to me over and over. If your young reader likes Step Into Reading books this will be a good one. I read the words with an Italian accent and it is that much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars anonymous 9 yr old, May 5, 2000

I gave this book a rating of 4 stars because I'm not really into poems, but I think it's pretty easy for me to read. I think some people younger than me would love this book if they like poems and if they like pretty easy books. I wish I liked poems because this was pretty good!
