Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Billy is one of the best hitters on his Little League team, Castle Pizza, sponsored by his father's pizza parlor. But Billy has been in a batting slump, which he blames on Lily, his 18-month-old half sister, who calls out "hit-a-hit-a-hit-a-hit" whenever he's at bat. His father and grandfather have suggestions for Billy, but the most practical one seems to come from his mother. She and her new husband, and their daughter Lily, will simply stay away from the games. At first Billy is delighted, but he soon misses Lily's chatter and his mother's support. And it isn't until the last play-off game that Billy realizes that families--and baseball--are like pizza, and each person (or piece) helps to make up the whole. Marzollo deftly uses baseball and pizza to probe the inner workings of families and friends. Billy's worries about his hitting, his love/hate feelings for his half sister and his confusion about his family are realistically and sensitively portrayed. The black-and-white illustrations are fresh and funny, scoring a home-run combination with the text. Ages 7-9.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-- Third-grader Billy can't seem to connect with a pitch. His father, owner of Spring Town's best pizza parlor and also the team's coach, assures him that everyone has a slump now and then, but Billy is convinced that his bad luck at bat is caused by his baby half-sister's irritating wail. How he works through not only his athletic crisis but also his family concerns forms the basis of the story. As with Amy Goes Fishing (Dial, 1980; o.p.), Marzollo focuses on the theme of family relationships--in this case, that of Billy's special closeness with his Italian-born grandfather, Nonno, and of his new awareness of the part that all of his family--original and step--play in his life. They are all, as Nonno tells him, "slices" in his family pie. Marzollo's latest effort is sure to score a hit with young sports fans familiar with minor league pressures. More importantly though, it is a good choice for reinforcing strong family values through a logical, if somewhat predictable, plot and well-defined characterizations. --Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, Wheeler School, Providence, RI

More About the Author

Jean Marzollo was born and raised in Manchester, Connecticut.

She says, "As a child, I loved to read and sew dolls' clothes, one outfit after another. I am a graduate of Manchester High School, the University of Connecticut, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After working as a high school English teacher and editor of Scholastic's "Let's Find Out" kindergarten magazine with Carol Devine Carson for 20 years, I began writing children's books. I have written over 130 books, including the award-winning, best-selling I SPY series for children, written completely in rhythm and rhyme. Rhythm and rhyme are like music without the tune; they lure and excite the ear. Children love rhythm and rhyme, and so do I. Do you know that I SPY actually has the same rhythm as "Old Mother Hubbard" and also rap? I treasure the beautiful, intricate photographs by Walter Wick in the I SPY books. When I wrote the first I SPY book, I automatically thought of kindergarten children so everything that I called for was concrete, something a 5-year-old can find. The result is a hunting game that children and grownups can play together successfully. Sometimes children are better than their parents! In recent years I took up painting and have begun to illustrate my own "books on paper" and "books online." You can see them on my website: jeanmarzollo.com. Writing and illustrating picture books today is as much fun as sewing dolls' clothes was when I was in third grade. As soon as I'm done with one book, I'm happily compelled to start the next."

Jean Marzollo lives in Upstate New York.
