Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Three exuberant children make pizza from scratch (with a little help from an adult) and enjoy eating it together. Full-page color layouts illustrate the multiethnic cooking crew as they mix and knead the dough, add sauce and toppings, and bake it. The rhyming text is right on target for the grade level. The short sentences and easy text, combined with the lively illustrations, clearly convey the process. A recipe is included for any readers inspired to try it themselves. An excellent addition to easy-reader shelves.

From Booklist

Gr. K-1. Young ones will learn to make pizza from scratch in this colorful entry in the Viking Easy-to-Read series. The rhyming text follows three friends as they collect ingredients, mix and knead the dough, add the toppings, bake, and then clean the kitchen. Although a few lines don't scan well, the rhyme and rhythm work overall and will help propel young readers through the pages, with vocabulary that's just right. The vibrant illustrations, reminiscent of Marjorie Priceman's work, reinforce and extend the action introduced in the words, showing the kids having fun and doing well on their own, with an adult on hand to handle the knives and oven. A pizza recipe concludes. Gillian Engberg

This book is easily used with school-age beginner English Language Learners (ELLs). The verbs can be taught using Total Physical Response. The nouns with a cooking experience. After making a pizza, ELLs can use the book as a resource in retelling and writing about the experience. It is an excellent choice for teachers with beginner ELLs in their classroom.
