Whisper Horse series:
Take Me Home
Country Roads
The Place I Belong

About the Story: Hannah Linden, a veterinarian has buried herself in a little small town in West Virginia, far from her professional woes and her ex-fiancé in Boston. She considered herself lucky to find someone who would hire her after she told them what happened in her previous job. Something else Hannah hadn’t expected, is her growing love for the town, its people and her patients.

She becomes emotionally touched with Matt, a young teenager who spent a day with her at the clinic learning how important animals are in people’s lives. Hannah finds Matt’s father complex and charming – someone she needs to stay away from to keep her heart intact.

Adam Bosch, Matt’s father and world-renowned chef, when learns of Matt’s existence cannot come to grips with the idea of being a father—he would destroy anyone close to him. Adam has issues he struggles with daily and knows he must keep a distance from people. He’s an alcoholic and has stayed away from the bottle for nine years, but when he drinks he's afraid that he would be abusive as his father was. Adam convinced himself he can’t be a father nor could he get married. What would he do to his wife or child? Adam fills his life with cooking and has a restaurant in Sanctuary that people fly in by helicopter to dine. That’s his life and he doesn’t need more, but when he meets Hannah, things begin to change.

When Hannah helped Adam with his troubled son he was drawn to her physically and emotionally. She was light to his dark. And he couldn’t stay away.

My Thoughts: This story had three things going for it that I really liked.

The setting is in a small town up in the mountains.

This novel follows in the path of the previous books in this series, maintaining the same level of quality. Very well written, full of emotion and issues that are finally resolved as you would hope. I have all of these books & if she writes another in this series, will purchase that one too. Very good read. As a horse lover, I like that there's a horse that plays a key role. These books are not just for horse lovers, though, as the plot will capture your interest if you like horses or not.

I really like the way Nancy Herkness brings all of her characters from the Whisper Horse series along for the ride in "The Place I Belong." When I love a book I love the characters and I am always reluctant to let them go because I always want to read more about them. "The Place I Belong" satisfies that desire to stay in touch with everyone while Adam, Hannah and Matt workout their problems and their feelings for each other. The Whisper Horse trilogy and Sanctuary, West Virginia are the perfect place to go for a wonderful summer read!

This third novel in the Whisper Horse series is a great romance that has everyone feeling right at home in Sanctuary, West Virginia from the beginning. All the characters from the first two Whisper Horse novels make an appearance at some point as we meet and get to know veterinarian Hannah Linden, chef Adam Bosch and his teenage son Matt.

With his handsome, dark looks and mysterious reserve Adam could very well be the man of Hannah's dreams but she is haunted by the memory of her ex-fiance. Hannah does not want to fall in love again. She has come to town to find sanctuary and to hide from a career scandal which winds up following her.

Adam knows all about career scandal and mistakes. He is determined to focus on his restaurant, The Aerie, his son Matt, who has recently come to live with him and his own problems. Women are the last thing on his mind when he finds himself in Dr. Linden's office with his wounded dog.

Hannah weaves her spell on Adam and Matt as they try to bond as a father and son by showing them her caring, warm, loving nature while working with her animal patients. Adam captures Hannah's attention with his brooding manner and world-famous cuisine.

I just discovered Nancy Herkness and read the Whisper Horse series books back-to-back. They were all great, but this one is my favorite.

So many things are just a little bit different than the usual romance novel. I loved Adam, Hannah, Adam's son Matt, dog Trace, and horse Satchmo. Adam is an expert chef, and I loved the way food and spices were woven into the story. The story conflicts were real and serious and the struggles the characters faced were handled intelligently and with realism. Adam's an alcoholic, and the reader gets to see his struggles with his disease and his fear. The story itself, how it and the characters evolve, are wonderful.

I loved the book's ending. This was just a really satisfying story that worked for me on many levels.

Nancy Herkness outdid herself with this latest addition to her Whisper Horse series. She handled the serious issue of alcoholism & the death of a parent with compassion. The interaction between Hannah and Matt made me laugh and had a very realistic touch to it. The entire novel seemed true to life. Adam & Hannah's connection could be felt throughout & had me riding the emotions along with the characters. Being able to relate to the characters & their daily struggles/triumphs, in my mind, is the mark of a very talented writer. My favorite in this series so far. Definitely worth reading, again and again. Hope we get much more in this series from this very talented writer.
