5.0 out of 5 stars Inspired
This is an inspired, genre-defying album that takes you on a journey from the dance-worthy to the divine. The licks are lush, the vibe worldly, the melodies other-worldly, the ideas timely -- the totality of it is somehow hypnotic and regenerative. This album just might have the power to heal. 3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but Could Be Better
I bought this CD because I saw Lili Haydn on "The Tonight Show" and found her music interesting. I had never heard violin used in rock or alternative music, and I had never heard of her before.

I like "Strawberry Street" (the one she performed on "The Tonight Show") the best, as it is upbeat and the violin adds an Asian flavor to the song, but overall...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and captivating, April 27, 2008

I first heard her while roaming around in a Borders store. I took a chance, and I'm glad I did. This isn't the first time that a classical violinist has been combined with rock...Lorenza Ponce comes to mind.

She has a sweet voice, but the violin remains her primary instrument. There are times when her violin playing sounds like guitar solos! Now, if only people can break out of their prejudices against violins in rock!

4.0 out of 5 stars Far-reaching mix of alt-pop, world music and space-rock, June 27, 2008
This review is from: Place Between Places (Audio CD)
This is the third album by singer-violinist Lili Haydn, who merges alt-pop and space rock with traces of world music and folk. Fans of all those old, classic Kate Bush albums will want to check this gal out; folks who like Peter Gabriel's latter-day explorations of global beat music, too. Haydn has a wide, dynamic range, with softer, more conventionally melodic songs like "Memory One" balanced by cosmic, proggy difficult listening, ala "Atom Heart Mother" (on "Powers Of Five," which closes the album...) Haydn's work won't be for everyone, but for the right audience, this album and others will be a long-lasting treat. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Music Guide)

I bought this CD because I saw Lili Haydn on "The Tonight Show" and found her music interesting. I had never heard violin used in rock or alternative music, and I had never heard of her before.

I like "Strawberry Street" (the one she performed on "The Tonight Show") the best, as it is upbeat and the violin adds an Asian flavor to the song, but overall there are only a few songs on this CD I enjoy listening to. The use of the violin is unique, but some of the songs are monotonous, and she doesn't seem to have strong vocal ability. I am interested in hearing more from her, though, and with the right material she could go far.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating & Powerful, July 3, 2008
This review is from: Place Between Places (Audio CD)
This record is absolutely gorgeous. The use of the violin is so unique and beautiful, as are the vocals. Resonates sensitivity, joy, heartbreak, and power - musically and lyrically. Such a refreshing contrast to the sterility of what we so often hear in the mainstream. Lili Haydn is remarkable, other-worldly onstage... should not be missed! I am typically not loose with my superlatives, but I just can't say enough about this artist. Her work should not only be on everyone's playlist, but should jump straight to the top. Enjoy!

Very pleased with my purchase. CD was brand new and delivery fast. Music wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, but I enjoy it.

I'm not certain how this CD ever got into my collection. I probably read a review of it, perhaps in the Wall Street Journal, and bought it out of interest. A singer/violinist is somewhat unusual, and perhaps that's why I bought. In any case, it turned out just not to be my kind of music.

Lille Haydn is a singer/song writer/violinist. She has a soft, weak voice which seems charming at first listen. Ultimately, it becomes tiresome and I have difficulty listening to the entire disc in one sitting. Any one song might be interesting and enjoyable in itself, but when I listen to the entire CD, I can just hardly wait for it to finish. The songs are rather good, I might add. Her violin accompaniment is excellent and a nice touch. However, the weepy string background with drummer and keyboards gets on my nerves. How might I characterize her? I'd say she's something of a weak-voiced Celine Dion. Undoubtedly, some will find the disc pleasant and enjoyable music. That I wouldn't dispute. I'm just not one of those people, and that's not Haydn's fault.

3.0 out of 5 stars Heard on Californication, December 17, 2009

I don't usually order these kinds of CDs so I'm not the best one to review it. I'm a jazz, R&B fan but I heard the one song on Californication and had to have the CD. I guess the rest of it has to grow on me but that one song "Saddest Sunset" is very nice but it sounded better on TV. Had I heard it on CD first I don't think I would've ordered the CD. Maybe I need to try her funkier ones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is Lily Hayden For You?, May 19, 2009

I've been a musician about 40 years and have heard many players and a wide variety of styles of music. I fell in love with Lily Haydn the 1st minute I heard her online. She is an excellent violinist, singer & composer. Her tunes vary in mood, color and genre. There is a wide variety here - slightly pop, alternative, outside and lots of nice melody. This can satisfy many moods for the listener. I give her a big thumbs up. Pick up this CD and enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, January 14, 2009
This review is from: Place Between Places (Audio CD)
As Lili's 3rd cd (#1 being the best...hard rock electric violin) this album is great! Lots of sweet piano and violin edged with a rock genre. Highly recommended. Lyrics are a bit sad, but what do we expect of Lili? Very seductive.
