Book Description

February 15, 2000
These days more and more people are scheduling getaways to retreat centers for their spiritual well-being--over 1.2 million Catholics alone during 1997. Located throughout the United States and Canada, these centers cater to the needs of people seeking quiet time, regardless of religious affiliation. Retreat possibilities range from one day of solitude surrounded by nature, to a few days of quiet time under the guidance of a resident spiritual director, to a week experiencing the rigorous rhythms of community monastery life.

In A PLACE FOR GOD, Timothy Jones shares the wisdom of his pilgrimages to retreat centers as diverse as a mountaintop hermitage overlooking the Pacific and a monastic oasis on Chicago's South Side. First he explains everything about retreats: what they are, why people go, how to prepare, what to pack, and what to do while there. Then he provides an extensive directory of over 250 retreat centers in all fifty states and Canada, complete with all the information readers need to contact the retreat center that is right for them. A PLACE FOR GOD is the perfect resource for anyone who wants to find spiritual fulfillment or simply a place to get away.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Christian pilgrims yearning to get away from it all will find this book an invaluable guide to the why, how and where of retreat-making. Jones (Awake My Soul, 1999) discusses the theology of periodic rests for the soul and addresses the details that make or break a retreat (packing appropriately, for instance). One especially astute chapter acknowledges the difficulty of setting aside the time for silence and prayer. The bulk of the book consists of Jones's state-by-state listings of more than 250 retreat centers, which are mostly Catholic, with a strong Episcopalian representation and a smattering of other traditions, including Mennonite, Quaker and Eastern Orthodox. The usual suspects, such as Thomas Merton's famous Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky, are found alongside fascinating alternatives such as the Orthodox Church's dog-breeding New Skete communities in upstate New York or the ecumenical Protestant Community of Jesus on Cape Cod. Jones provides practical information concerning costs, directions and accommodations (these range widely, from severe huts and institutional-style dormitories to lovely rooms with private baths). A useful glossary explains terms such as friary, hermitage and "directed retreat" (one that provides a spiritual counselor). This book should find an eager audience among the more than 1.2 million Catholics who went on retreat in 1997, as well as among like-minded Protestants and unaffiliated spiritual seekers. (Mar.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected, December 5, 2000

This review is from: A Place for God: A Guide to Spiritual Retreats and Retreat Centers (Paperback)
If you are looking for a directory on CHRISTIAN spiritual retreats, then this book is for you. However, for those of us looking for a spiritual, yet non-religious experience, then this guide is not helpful. I was hoping this directory would help me find spiritual retreats embracing a variety of practices. It did not. Otherwise, it is a well-organized and thorough guide within its narrow focus.
