I've listened to this album several times now. Great band! They have a good concept going. The result is very easy to listen to.

It is obvious that the Woods have been influenced by a whole plethora of late 60s -early 70s folk/rock, but they have come up with a distinct sound independent of those influences. The mood they set for each number shows some careful marrying of instuments to obtain a sometimes surreal feel. Five stars would be appropriate, but I'm thinking these guys may tweak a couple things and blow us away.

I'm ready for another trip to The Deep Dark Woods! 2007's Hang Me, Oh Hang Me is next.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Well Done April 6, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
This album is certainly worth the cost of admission. Beautiful arrangements with touches of Hammond organ and some slight fingerpicked banjo abound. Nostalgic and haunting steel guitar licks shimmer over the top of most songs as well. I stumbled across this band and am certainly happy that I did. If you like Dolorean, Bonnie Prince Billy, Great Lake Swimmers or even some of the older Sun Kil Moon, this will certainly be in heavy rotation in your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT COUNTRIFIED FOLK August 23, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Deep Dark Woods on first listen reminded me more than a little bit
of The Great Lakes Swimmers; mostly mid-tempo folk songs, well written,
introspective and a cut above most of the pack of contemporary folkies.
Perhaps the biggest difference from GLS is that DDW has a more countrified
sound, more pedal-steel etc. The lyrics are also a bit more traditionally
influenced-- a number of songs are about "ramblin" & "rovin" or leaving.
Although there is a lot of 5* material here like the title song and The
Banks Of The Leopold Canal there are a few cliched moments, songs like
Just Can't Lose exemplifies those.
I gave this "Ramblin" CD 4 1/2* because it is in need of editing a bit. Perhaps
the album could have benefited from cutting a couple of songs--still this is
an excellent album and even the songs I feel are a bit cliched are not that
bad. If you are a fan of Great Lakes Swimmers you will probably like this, if
you haven't heard the GLS but like this you may want to check them out--I
recommend the albums Ongiara and Lost Channels over their latest New Wild

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing on vinyl! January 14, 2013
I picked up this record at my local record store that just happens to also have a concert venue. This band is excellent live too! The band is in a genera known as Americana, which does tend to have a bit of a country sound. I personally do not think they have a country sound. It reminds me of a Neil Young or Bob Dylan style. If you get the chance to see them live, it is well worth going!
