The book was in super shape for being a used book - and a great value as well. I gave it to my daughter, who was thrilled to get it.

Beautifully written story of a young man coming of age. Elizabeth Yates' style of writing is class containing gorgeous descriptions and an engaging story. If you have read Mountain Born and enjoyed it as much as our family did, then this is a great addition to any family library. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Clipping from Inside Front Cover, October 22, 2008
This review is from: A PLACE FOR PETER (Hardcover)
Many readers have already met Peter in MOUNTAIN BORN and ONE IN THE YEAR, but to those for whom this book sis the first introduction the meeting will be rewarding. Peter is a husky boy, reared on his father's farm in a land of wide pastures and deep woods, rimmed by the mountains. Peter's story is one of daily human adventure which is both moving and challenging. Through the struggles of misunderstanding with his father, loneliness in the absence of his mother, and a deep desire to match his growing physical strength with equally manly responsibility and achievement, Peter emerges with a new sense of values and deeper awareness of his own worthwhile place in the world. Elizabeth Yates tells the story with beauty and conviction. The changing seasons and life of the farm are vividly portrayed. There are adventures in the sugar bush, trail cutting in the woods, and encounter with rattlesnakes, and always the warm friendliness between man and the domestic animals. The devotion of Shep, the collie, is a moving force of the book and it is told with the easy directness of one who loves dogs almost as much as she loves people. Through it all, there runs the quiet wisdom of old Benj, like a strong thread weaving together the widely various stands into one meaningfull whole.
Nora S. Unwin, the English wood engraver and illustrator, has grown familiar with the American scene through six years' residence in New England. Her work is strong and clean-cut, matching the text well with its vigorous rendering of the mountain country and clear understanding of the people who find their best way of like in working with the land.
