Back in 1977 as a record buying teenager, I didn't have the luxury of a listening station ( or an Amazon.com for that matter ) to help guide my music purchases. It was the frequent playing of Pablo Cruises' " Atlanta June " and " Whatcha Gonna Do ? " by a local FM album rock station ( WCCC ) that convinced me to buy this album . I wasn't disappointed . I don't feel that there's one bad track to be found here . The first two tracks, " A Place in the Sun " and " Whatcha Gonna Do ? " are catchy, singable mid tempoed songs . The theme of the next five songs is about love and romance but not in a corny or sickeningly sweet way . " Raging Fire " is I think one of the great wedding songs that never was . Its words, sentiment and piano playing are beautiful ; a Valentine set to music that's one of my favorites . The songs " Can't You Hear the Music " and " Never Had A Love " are seamlessly blended together by high energy guitar, piano, and drum playing that sounds really great. Next comes " Atlanta June ", which I believe almost anyone would fall for after just one listen . The words and melody sung are most certainly memorable but it's Cory Lerios' gorgeous crystalline piano playing that helps make it one of the albums top 2 or 3 tracks if not its' best . Overall this collection of songs is enjoyable and deserves its' place ( in the sun ) in your 100 disc cd changer.

Pablo Cruise was under-rated when they were around and are undeservedly forgotten now. They produced two great albums, 'Worlds Away' and 'A Place in the Sun' at a mid-point in their career. Earlier albums were uneven, at best, and later albums didn't have more much to say but I'm proud to have these two albums on my shelf. 'A Place in the Sun' had it all: strong melodies, unforgettable hooks, versatile musicianship on every instrument, and great vocals. Though typically regarded as a straight pop band Pablo Cruise smoothly blends elements of pop, jazz, surf music, reggae, and even country music into the mix: so smoothly, in fact, that a lot of critics didn't even notice. One other thing: I'm a notoriously grumpy person and listening to this album puts a smile on my face.

"Place In The Sun" #19 (1977).
3rd album "Place In The Sun", is a fairly good album, nice title track #42, followed by their 1st big hit "Whatcha Gonna Do" #6 and the smooth "Raging Fire". You also get the spunky "Never Had A Love" #87 and the mellow rocker "Atlanta June". Last album with bassist Bud Cockrell.
