An Awesome Book,

This review is from: A Place for Wonder: Reading and Writing Nonfiction in the Primary Grades (Paperback)
A Place for Wonder is an easy to read, non-threatening look at how to capture the natural wonder and questions of the young developing mind into the area of non-fiction reading and writing. The book fits hand and glove with Writer's Workshop as a natural flow into the non-fiction reading and writing areas that can be diffcult for students to grasp. The idea of using teachable moments is a refreshing reminder of the "old days" when teachers were able to take the time to enhance students curiosity. The use of centers, technology, and the Writers Workshop model takes the reader into Jen McDonough's classroom for a real life look at students actively engaged in reading and writing. A Place for Wonder is not another "thing" to teach but enhances and gives fresh ideas to what teachers are already doing. I highly recommend this book to all readers who are involved in the teaching of young students. Many of the ideas are adaptable to the older students. It is a must have for staff resource libraries and would make an excellent gift for a teacher and the classroom.

Heard & McDonough have created an excellent resource for teachers interested in supporting primary grades children in reading and writing nonfiction. They provide tons of ideas for inquiry centers, for helping students comprehend nonfiction texts, and for guiding students' research writing in ways that will avoid dull, plagiarized writing. I highly recommend this book!

Nonfiction can be just as wondrous as fiction for young readers, if the seeds of curiosity are planted. "A Place for Wonder: Reading and Writing Nonfiction in the Primary Grades" is a guide for educators who want to better help their students take an interest in science and history among other educational subjects. Wonder centers, projects, and other methods are discussed making for a solidly recommended resource that should not be ignored. "A Place for Wonder: Reading and Writing Nonfiction in the Primary Grades" is worth consideration for every primary school teacher.
