Opening the story with a disturbing first chapter, the plot then jumps thirteen months ahead to who Jevin Banks has now become, abandoning his entertainment act to pursue documentary TV where he and his associates intend to expose a mind-to-mind experimental program tied to a huge pharmaceutical company. Undercover as a romantic couple for the testing of their psychic "non-local" communications, Jevin and his assistant Charlene get caught in what seems like an inescapable situation involving the elderly doctor who's responsible for conducting the studies and recording the data.
Introducing Jevin's other friends and associates, we meet the intelligent, weird, conspiracy theorist, and strangely philosophical good friend Xavier, the affectionate, sincere, and clever Charlene, and the somewhat wacky computer genius Fionna and her four kids. When danger forces the group to explore other avenues related to these studies, we get looks at various psychopaths and sadists who hold important positions in terrifying experimental endeavors. Exposing the real results of these testings might be the death of them all - if the Voodoo priestess doesn't catch on to them first.Read more ›
Now, Steven has begun a new series, The Jevin Banks Experience, with Placebo. And on the first page, it is clear that the readers is in for a ride that they will not soon forget.
We are introduced to the main character, Jevin Banks right away. Jevin is a former illusionist who attempts to debunk replicate the tricks and effects of psychics, televangelists, con men, and fortune-tellers on his television show. In Placebo, we find Jevin and his cohorts attempting to debunk a mind-to-mind communication program, but to put it quite simply, things aren't as they seem. Soon, Jevin is thrown into a conspiracy that reaches to high places that he could have never guessed.
With his trademark suspense, Steven James draws the reader into the story and lets them connect with the characters that populate the novel. Placebo is a taut thriller that never lets up on the urgency. When you are reading it, you will find that you will be flipping the pages faster than you thought you had been.
When it comes to science in a novel, sometimes an author will leave their readers in the dust, letting them try to understand the terminology and how everything works. Fortunately, readers will not have to worry about that in this book as Steven takes time to explain such things without making it confusing or boring.
Jevin is easy to connect to. Steven wastes no time in making him easily relatable and likeable.Read more ›
Placebo was different from what I was expecting, but still really good. It had a unique storyline and definitely made me learn about things I hadn't even heard of before this book. One of the only negatives for me was some of the medical terms in the early part of this book - I found myself having a hard time understanding what was being talked about (this may have only been a problem for me).
I loved the characters - both the main and secondary ones. I think my favorite would probably have to be Xavier; I don't know what exactly it was about him (maybe how he believed in so many conspiracies...), I just found many things about him humorous. :)
Overall, Placebo was a great read that had some creepiness and suspense, plus some thought-provoking moments. I really enjoyed it and look forward to book two, Singularity, which is set to release Fall 2013. If you enjoy suspense/thrillers with some medical elements, then I think you'll enjoy Placebo.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book for my review. I was not required to give a positive review, only my honest opinion - which I've done. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.*

I enjoyed this book but don't think it lives up to James's other work. This wasn't as suspenseful or as enthralling as the Patrick Bowers series.Published 1 month ago by Kindle Customer
A different take for James. Twisted and turned a lot. Not sure how much I like this character though.Published 3 months ago by D. Lewis
