1.0 out of 5 stars expensive journal
A lot of money for a blank book in which to write. If I had seen this book in person before purchasing, I wouldn't have.

4.0 out of 5 stars 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal, September 4, 2005
This review is from: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal (Travel Journal) (Paperback)
A conveniently sized travel journal (8" x 5.5" x .5") to write down first time impressions to accompany the "1,000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz". There are plenty of pages to write descriptions of travel adventures, plus every 8-10 pages there is one page of additional experiences you can experience, i.e. "Seven Tasty Reasons to Overindulge", "Eight Ways to Travel Abroad Without Leaving Home", etc. The back of the book has the 1,000 places checklist for easy reviewing. Also, a particularly helpful section follows the checklist including "Inernational Dialing Codces and Time Differences", "Conversions and Measures", "Helpful Web Sites", and "Useful Phrases". The front cover has a place for that precious picture CD of all the 1,000 places visited! A great companion journal to the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Addition, November 3, 2006
This review is from: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal (Travel Journal) (Paperback)
This book is high quality and a good addition to "1000 Places To See Before You Die," but not really necessary. Has good trivia interspersed throughout it and between whatever you write in it during your travels.

4.0 out of 5 stars Happy trails!, June 15, 2011

This review is from: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal (Travel Journal) (Paperback)
Not to be confused with the large book of the same name, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die, updated ed. (2010) (1,000 Before You Die), this is a smaller stiff-cover paperback book that is designed to be used as a travel diary or journal of your personal experiences visiting places far and near!

The book is divided into 3 maim sections; about 100 blank, lined pages for recording the dates and places visited (plenty of space to write whatever you want about the scenery, food, sights, sounds, etc.), a small reference guide that has international dialing codes, time zone information, a few short phrases in multiple languages, and some metric conversion charts for temperature, weight etc., as well as clothing size equivalents, and a checklist of all the 1000 places mentioned in the larger book that can be marked off as you visit them. There's even room to add a few of your own at the bottom of each page if you wanted! I know I added in Cabo San Lucas to mine. You don't need to have the other book to use this one for its intended purpose. Interspersed in the blank pages are quotes and other interesting tidbits to read or to spark your own journalistic musings.

It's a great little item to take with you in a bag, backpack, or purse while traveling. If you wanted you could put post cards in the book as markers or use the attached red ribbon to hold your spot. There is a little folder in the front cover of the book that you can use for receipts or other small bits of paper but it's not very large nor is it expandable. If you like, you can glue another colored envelope on the back cover and make an additional place to tuck small items.

The travel journal makes a nice gift for anyone who likes to travel and who wants to record impressions of places visited. As a previous reviewer remarked, this item would be even better if it was spiral bound AND if it had a little band that held it closed. Other than those two small issues, I recommend the journal!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Motivator, August 13, 2008
This review is from: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal (Travel Journal) (Paperback)
In the past I have often taken a spiral notebook on trips with the intention of keeping a daily journal, but intentions don't always translate into reality. This sturdy, easy-to-carry journal contains plenty of space for writing, but, more importantly, is a great motivator for actually keeping that journal. After all, I paid for this fancy book and should certainly fill it with insightful observations and experiences! The basic information it provides (conversions, useful phrases, etc.) also encourage keeping it handy. The daily travel quotes and the occasional lists scattered throughout are enjoyable to note.

4.0 out of 5 stars 10 Reasons to Read 1000 Places to See Before You Die, December 6, 2006
(1) Taglined as 'A traveler's Life List' , this book lives up to its rather boastful self-anointed claim. It's an excellent, comprehensive list that you can check off to tell yourself and the world that you've been to the most memorable, the most breathtaking, the most interesting, the most exciting and the most exotic places most coveted in the world.

(2) A 'life list' must fulfil its mission of providing a comprehensive lineup of reviews on all corners of the earth and make sure all countries (around 192 at last count)are represented. '1000 places' captured all these systematically in easy-to-find sections Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, USA, Latin America and Australasia (which it diplomatically put down as Australia, New Zealand & The Pacific Islands - instead of subsuming the beautiful likes of Fiji, French Polynesia & PNG into the term I used)

(3) Highlighting not just the places but more importantly the experiences, it's a good read to get a taste of real-life experiences at the places discovered, the next best thing to being there yourself.

(4) Besides meticulously the interesting sights to look out for, the splendour of natural sights, "1000 places" did a commendable job of researching the tasty food to savour, and tickles your fantasy about they really taste like.

(5) Includes writing on the people you should say 'hi' to.

(6) Check out the insightful nuggets on what the places mean to the people there - the soul of the place. Wouldn't you like to say that you've visited a place with soul?

(7) Practicality being another important criteria, the book is a handy source of information on the type of experience, how to get there, contact details, cost and the most important of all - when to go to get the best bang for buck.

(8)A concise but comprehensive listing of must-visit spots, must-dos, gastronomic delights for features on important individual cities, like Madrid for example.

(9)The author's personal notes. Most people would skip the introduction but there are some practical, down-to-earth suggestions on what mindset the traveler should adopt to enjoy their trip. Eg. " Remember that you are the one with strange customs visiting someone else's country"

(10) The quotable quotes - some of that are not original but it somehow fans the beauty of travelling further in the mind when you see them all concentrated together just before the journey through the pages begins.
My favourite is that quoted of Mark Twain, " Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the same harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

So, for all the glowing comments above, why did I withhold the one star needed to make it a clean sweep? Reason #1: 183 pages are devoted to the great US of A, which I suspect is some deliberate patriotic slant, but hopefully with the version solely for USA/Canada in print, the next edition will even be better in covering more far-flung parts of the earth.

Reason #2: the pictures would have been postcard-perfect should they be in colour.

However, please do not let these minor blemishes cloud your enjoyment of a wonderful book which I'm sure should you decide to make this little investment, you will be using time and again for the rest of your life to record the fantastic sights you've taken in. Who knows, it may even inspire the realisation of your dream to put your foot in every part of the world!

This is a great way to keep a log of where one has been and what one say there. I have filled one, but saw it destroyed, so I'm having to write it all again. It's taking a LONG time to remember everything. But it's all worth it, just to be able to recall everything.

After purchasing Ms. Schultz's book 1000 Places to see before you die, which has been invaluable to me, I was of course curious about her Journal, she's done it again, the Journal is attractive and full of useful information, it is a great companion to go along with the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoy Your Retirement, Claudia!! You Deserve it!!, September 30, 2010

This review is from: 1,000 Places to See Before You Die Traveler's Journal (Travel Journal) (Paperback)
Claudia, my friend and co-worker for the last 23 years, retired today. I know she will be working one day a week, but her presence will be definitely missed. She has always been my steady shipmate in a sometimes wicked sea.

As she embarks on this journey called "the rest of your life" I know she is planning to do some travelling, so I purchased this blank journal for her. But I did not leave it blank. For the past several weeks I have given to all our current co-workers and many previous ones. All wanted to recall special memories and wish her the best. That is the type of person she is. Quiet (I thought her mother's name was "Mrs Mertz" instead of "Mrs Metz" and neither one ever corrected me.), thoughtful (She quit using a certain type of cough drop every day after I commented on her stinky perfume.), dedicated to God, her family and her work that on a standard we should all strive to emulate.

I am blessed to have had such a wonderful co-worker for so long.

I am blessed to have had such a wonderful friend for so long.

Vaya con Dios!
