This second edition of a useful demographic resource draws on more recent Census Bureau and other federal agency data than the 1993 edition (LJ 10/1/93), and its coverage is somewhat expanded. Its new editors are both experienced in the compilation and use of demographic and economic statistics. Following a brief introductory overview, data are arranged alphabetically by state and city or township within three major tables. Table A covers land area, population, households, employment, crime, construction, and local government finances based on data gathered from 1990 to 1996 for cities whose populations exceed 10,000. Table B lists 1992 data on sales, receipts, and employees for incorporated places with a population of at least 2500. The last and longest table lists 16 columns of population and housing characteristics from 1990 data for more than 32,000 places, with 1996 estimates of population. Those familiar with County and City Data Book (GPO, 1994) and the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book (GPO, 1991) will recognize a similar layout of easily located data in all three works, although efficient comparison of two or more places is often difficult. This work often has more recent data and covers more places than the two earlier Census Bureau publications but does not list as many population and economic characteristics.
