Book Description

April 5, 2011 Gone

It's been eight months since all the adults disappeared. Gone.

They've survived hunger. They've survived lies. But the stakes keep rising, and the dystopian horror keeps building. Yet despite the simmering unrest left behind by so many battles, power struggles, and angry divides, there is a momentary calm in Perdido Beach.

But enemies in the FAYZ don't just fade away, and in the quiet, deadly things are stirring, mutating, and finding their way free. The Darkness has found its way into the mind of its Nemesis at last and is controlling it through a haze of delirium and confusion. A highly contagious, fatal illness spreads at an alarming rate. Sinister, predatory insects terrorize Perdido Beach. And Sam, Astrid, Diana, and Caine are plagued by a growing doubt that they'll escape—or even survive—life in the FAYZ. With so much turmoil surrounding them, what desperate choices will they make when it comes to saving themselves and those they love?

Plague, Michael Grant's fourth book in the bestselling Gone series, will satisfy dystopian fans of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Though the desperate, dirty, starving teens of the Gone series look decreasingly like the clean-cut hotties on the book jackets, Grant’s sf-fantasy thrillers continue to be the very definition of page-turner. Nearly out of water and beset with two types of plagues (one like a flu, the other a horde of flesh-eating bugs), the FAYZ community of superfriends and superenemies must once again band together and fight. Being dumped into this populous soap opera, with all its powers and vendettas, will doom newcomers. But who’d be crazy enough to start here? Great fun for fans. Grades 7-10. --Daniel Kraus

Review

Praise for PLAGUE“The very definition of a page-turner.”—ALA Booklist“The characters’ interior struggles are almost as vivid as the action. Fans will be satisfied—for now.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) (Starred Review) )

More About the Author

Michael Grant was born in a manger.

Okay, no he wasn't. And that was a stupid thing to say. There was no manger. It was a log cabin. A log cabin in Los Angeles.

Or possibly a trailer.

And then while defending his country (technically it was his father, he was just an Army brat,) he moved all over the country and to France and became the incredibly well-educated, well-rounded, well-adjusted . . .

Yeah, okay that last part's a lie, too. The moving everywhere thing is true. But the sad reality is that Michael's a rootless, disconnected, indifferently-educated, sullen, obnoxious, disaffected misanthrope. With no hair. I mean seriously: look at the man's head. Do you see hair? No.

Where was I? I mean he.

Michael Grant is married to Katherine (K.A.) Applegate. They've been together for 30 years. Which doesn't say much for Katherine's judgment does it? And they've been writing for 20 years, sometimes as partners -- BOYFRIENDS/GIRLFRIENDS, ANIMORPHS, EVERWORLD -- and sometimes on their own.

Michael and Katherine have two kids, Jake 12 and Julia 9. (Feet tall. Get it? 12 feet tall? Ah hah hah. Yeah, okay: not funny.) Anyway, the point is that Michael Grant is the author or co-author of 150 books. Yeah: 150. Most recently the critically-acclaimed GONE and HUNGER.

No, really: critically-acclaimed by VOYA, Booklist, School Library Journal, KLIATT and Publishers Weekly. And best of all by Stephen Freaking KIng himself! Oh, yeah: THE Stephen King. Of course Kirkus dumped on him, but Michael would like to make it clear that Kirkus is in no way a collection of illiterate halfwits. No! Never would Michael say such a thing.

Michael can be reached on Twitter @theFAYZ, or on Facebook as "authorMichaelGrant."

5.0 out of 5 stars Grant does it again April 10, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Michael Grant has the rare capacity to understand how teenagers think, to comprehend the fact that they are often capable of thinking like adults while they continue to act and make choices which are unwise or impulsive.

Plague is just as riveting--with just as many "OMG" moments--as the other three books in the series to date. With each book, there is some character who grows or changes or steps up. In this book, it is Computer Jack... and perhaps someone else....

I love that Grant has been consistent with the personality of each character, and each character is thoughtfully crafted, a distinct individual among the rest. My favorite new character with this book is Sanjit....

I must include again my normal caveat for parents and teachers who are looking for Young Adult books to get their teens reading: I do not recommend these books for younger than high school age. There is violence (no profanity--good on you, Mr. Grant), and children die. But older teens love these books and devour them quickly as they are absolute, riveting page turners. (In my classroom, I've had to replace the earlier books in the series as they were 'read to death' by my students.) A further, more important point is that Grant places his characters in situations where there is no easy escape, and they must choose to do what is right or what is wrong in order to survive. The 'life lessons' are not overbearing, just enough to make us empathize with the good guys and really, really hate the bad guys.

I read this one in two days. Can't wait for the next installment!!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite of the Gone series!!! Awesome! April 13, 2011

I loved this book. I thought it was surprising, suspenseful, action packed and excellent. It is hands down my favorite of the Gone books. However, one cannot read them out of order. You must read them all for this book to be great :-) because part of it is knowing all the previous story lines from the other books.

Anyway though I highly recommend this book if you have read the other three. It was creepy, some gruesome scenes for sure, well written and just an awesome story.

I dont want to spoil anything though so I am not giving away any details! Loved it though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Plauge better then the last July 4, 2011
By Kate
Format:Hardcover
I was really disapointed with lies, I cant really point out why but i just didnt feel the connection I had with the other books. Im a fast reader and it took me months to want to finish lies....But Plauge?
Plauge is amazing, i wanted to slam the book into the wall at some points (and may have) in the heat of passion becuase I was just mad about what was happening, I was emotionally connect tell the end. It was a very exciting read, and it took me a day because I couldnt put the book down.
