More About the Author

Writing about others is easier than writing about myself, so I would like to start out by publicly thanking my beautiful teacher at Grandin Court Elementary School in Roanoke, Virginia, for encouraging that awkward little kid to follow her dream and write stories. There have been many very kind people in my life, but Mrs. Sherman deserves an award for allowing me to read that day's offerings to my classmates each afternoon.

It couldn't have been easy for her. In retrospect, I realize those 1-2 page stories about everyday occurrences must have been awfully boring to her. Mrs. Sherman, I'd like for you to know that my writing style has improved since then.

Richmond Professional Institute (now known as Virginia Commonwealth University) gave me wonderful training in the secretarial realm, and it has served me well over the years. When not burning the midnight oil writing a book or article, I work as a church secretary; so that training is being used day and night. Being a secretary (nowadays referred to as an Administrative Assistant) is a key that opens many doors. As a secretary, I have seen firsthand behind-the-scenes operations in the aluminum industry, the worlds of insurance and banking, the medical field, a radio station, and churches, both large and small. I'd say my best education came from the six years I spent as a Legal Assistant to a personal-injury attorney. One learns much about human nature by being the liaison between the injured party and his lawyer.

After living all my life in Virginia, we moved to the southwest in 1980. The difference in the cultures of the two regions is vast, and I'm afraid I still haven't become properly southwesternized. Early training leaves a profound imprint on us for life, it seems.

As mother to two grown sons, I've found this to be the most fulfilling time of life. Please stop by my website at www.sandragrabman.com and say "Howdy!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking biography of neglected child actress., April 8, 2005

This review is from: Plain Beautiful: The Life of Peggy Ann Garner (Paperback)
Peggy Ann Garner was a child actress who won an Oscar for her memorable performance in Elia Kazan's 1945 film "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn". This sympathetic, but objective account of her interesting, and at times difficult, life draws on the author's extensive research including interviews and correspondence with friends, colleagues and relatives. There are extracts from letters and dozens of rare black-and-white photographs. An appendix lists Peggy's film, TV and radio work and there is a thorough index. An important subtext is Peggy's relationship with her mother (who turns out to be a truly amazing character) and the book offers a fascinating account of a mother-daughter relationship through several decades which somehow just about endures despite the enormous strains induced by parental ambition.

This review is from: Plain Beautiful: The Life of Peggy Ann Garner (Paperback)
The title to Sandra Grabman's book, "Plain Beautiful," nicely sums up Peggy Ann Garner.
She was plain, yet she was beautiful.
She was an extremely talented actress yet she never became a big star.
She was sweet and kind-hearted, yet had tragic family relationships .
She was an amazingly mature and level-headed youngster but not as much as an adult.
Garner led a unique life, yet so much like so many other actors.
There have been numerous great child actors on film the past century but few as talented as Peggy Ann. For any doubters, just watch "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn." This was an incredible child actress and why her career didn't go always go in the direction it should have gone is detailed in Grabman's lovingly-written biography.
This is a definitely worth a read for anyone who admires Peggy Ann's contiibutions to the film world and for those looking for another interesting biography of what pushy parents can do to their child.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is plain beautiful!, January 13, 2006

This review is from: Plain Beautiful: The Life of Peggy Ann Garner (Paperback)

I seldom read biographies because I find that many read like history textbooks. I found this book by accident and stayed up into the wee hours of the night reading it. I couldn't put it down!

Sandra Grabman left no stone unturned in researching "Plain Beautiful," and through friends and relatives she is able to get into the heart, mind, and soul of Peggy Ann Garner. If you were a Garner fan, this book will give you an inside look at every aspect of her personal and professional life. If you don't remember who Peggy Ann Garner was, as I didn't before picking up the book, you'll still enjoy reading about the life of this sweet, beautiful woman who won an Oscar for the role of young Francie in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn."

The book is well written, contains lots and lots of photos of Peggy and her family and friends, and will keep you reading late into the night. I can honestly say it's the best biography I have ever read. I look forward to reading more books by this author.
